No, it’s not an oversight by the proofreaders at Arcadia News . It is Welsh for “Come with me and visit Wales.” And if you were to visit Wales, you would have no problem with language because, although Welsh is spoken by about one in five residents, English is understood everywhere. Language is only one part of the Celtic heritage and culture that identify this unique part of the United Kingdom. Reliving our travels to Wales by looking at our photos and reading our journals reaffirmed that there is no part of this beautiful country that we wouldn’t gladly visit again. If you’re attracted to seeing castles, this is the place for you. In North Wales you can explore Conwy Castle and learn from excellent guides about this Flagship UNESCO World Heritage site. But be aware that there are about 400 other castles to visit also! Caernarfon was especially meaningful to us because it connects a long history to present times. In 1969, Queen Elizabeth presented Prince Charles to the people of Wales as their prince from this castle. Snowdonia National Park is also in the northern part of Wales and is popular with hikers and walkers. You can also take in this spectacular area on a train that goes to the highest summit in all of England and Wales. Two welcoming and picturesque towns we visited in this area were Betws-y-Coed and Llangollen. However, there are charming villages everywhere, and it’s a plus when you arrive on market day and can experience and appreciate the local culture. The woolen industry is significant in Wales, which led to a highlight on one of our trips there. We visited a farm where we were introduced to the many different breeds of sheep in the area, watched a sheep being sheared, witnessed a highly trained border collie herding a flock in the adjoining fields, and then got to hold the collie’s pups. We drove around the countryside and observed the sheep seemingly grazing everywhere with a new appreciation of their value. In the south, Cardiff is the bustling capital city and is referred to as the heart of modern Wales. Another special destination in this part of the country was St. Davids, the farthest west coast point. This is the birthplace of St. David, the patron saint of Wales, and the home of a cathedral and shrine to honor his memory. Two locations right on the border of Wales and England were like magnets to a retired English teacher. Tintern Abbey, the subject of the famous poem by William Wordsworth, and Hay-on-Wye, the international “town of books.” Each summer this is the site of the Festival of Literature and Arts. Just imagine the fascination of a town with more than 30 bookshops! Hwyl! (Goodbye, but come again!) Dod gyda mi ac i ymweld cymru WHERE’S THE NEIGHBOR? Bill and Jean Hodgson travelled through Wales, visiting castles and experiencing the language.
