Page 30 May 2 016 By Riley Kissee The area on Seventh Street just north of Camelback has seen rapid growth over the last two years. This neighborhood has become a hub for adaptive reuse projects, which include popular establishments such as The Yard, Okra and Otro Café. Now there’s a new kid on the block to add to the impressive list of dining destinations: Joe’s Midnight Run. The space originally housed the mid century classic, Joe’s Drive-In Liquor. The new namesake lounge ref lects the building’s history with the overall décor and with the 40-ounce to-go growlers that serve as a nod to the original liquor store. On the exterior, guests are welcomed by a wall labeled with lyrics from prominent ’80s and ’90s songs, which permeates into the venue’s soundtrack as well. The expansive patio facing Seventh Street has string lights swaying above the outdoor seating. The interior space is outfitted with a cement floor, exposed beams, brick and pressed metal ceilings, paired with rows of modern bulb lamps that dangle above the patrons. An open kitchen design allows you to watch the chefs bustling behind the counter. The kitchen is fueled entirely by fire, as the food is prepared on wood-burning grills and a large, tile-covered, wood-fired oven. The menu, developed by Executive Chef Michael Goldsmith, touts a globally inspired menu full of casual eats. The menu’s inspiration comes from cuisine and f lavors derived from Brazil, Spain, Korea, Argentina and the United States. This includes Brazilian ahi tuna, Spanish-style grilled octopus, Argentinian skirt steak and a hearty burger piled high with beef, cheese, pulled-pork and chicharrones. Behind the bar is an impressive selection of beers on tap, bottles of wine, champagne and cocktails. But what’s more notable about the bar is that, with the exception of cocktails, every item is available to go, just as it was when Joe’s Drive- In Liquor occupied the space. Guests can take advantage of the patio during brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dishes include Smoked Trout, Chorizo and Eggs and Banana French Toast, all of which can be paired with a Bellini, mimosa or Bloody Mary. What started as simple 8-bit entertainment has developed into three- dimensional graphics with complex story lines and an excess of features. The video game industry is projected to see continued growth in the years to come and this is not only ref lected by the buzz garnered from next generation consoles, but the renewed interest in classic arcade gaming as well. Ariel Bracamonte is very passionate about classic gaming. In 2011, Bracamonte bought his first vintage arcade machine. What began as a one-time purchase, soon became a hobby. He attended industry trade shows, seeking rare arcade units to add to his collection. He salvaged forgotten cabinets, which house the game’s hardware, from dusty garages and basements. He saved them from backyards where they had become decrepit out in the rain. Any unit that sustained significant damage was revived through the replacement of buttons, motherboards and equipment. “As I bought the games, I became really attached to them. I wanted to bring new life to the machines,” Bracamonte said. What’s more, Bracamonte was inspired to refurbish worn paneling with custom artwork. In 2013, he hosted a First Friday event titled The Artcade Show, which used vintage cabinets and allowed artists to paint their interpretation of the games on the side. “We put together about 25 arcade machines and gave them to different local artists,” Bracamonte said. “We saw the units as blank canvases.” A few years later, Bracamonte partnered with Tucker Woodbury of Genuine Concepts to house all of his games in a new establishment in downtown Phoenix. They called it Cobra Arcade Bar. “I wanted to bring the barcade idea to Phoenix, it was something I had seen in other cities,” Bracamonte said. “It gives people a different experience when they go out at night.” Cobra Arcade Bar’s lineup includes over 40 nostalgic games, everything from ’80s favorites such as Asteroids and Galaga to prominent ’90s games such as Mortal Kombat and Tekken Tag Tournament. The cabinets are also rotated frequently to give other relics a moment to relive their glory days.
