Lockett, a local remodeler and builder, was preparing to remodel the house located at 4242 E. Amelia Ave. in Phoenix, so he went to the attic to investigate the direction of the roof truss. Tucked away in a dark and dusty corner was a duffel bag that did not belong to Lockett. Inside of the bag was a military dress uniform with several ribbons and patches attached, wooden shoes, a dress belt and an officer’s cap. Also included was an envelope filled with cancelled checks from the 1940s, one of which was made out to the Purdue University Book Store. Lockett said he deduced the military uniform had to be from World War II because of the dates on the checks. “I knew immediately that I had to reunite this piece of history with its owner,” Lockett said, “If I could not locate the owner, the uniform needed to be on display at the Papago Military Museum on 52nd Street and McDowell.” Lockett said his father, Jack, is a retired law enforcement officer as well as a retired member of the Air Force. He said he was able to use his military background to recognize some of the patches and insignias. “I discovered that the officer was assigned to the 90th Infantry Division, and that they had been a part of some of the major campaigns fought in Europe during WWII,” Lockett said. After learning more about the uniform, it was time to figure out whom the military garb belonged to, and for that, Lockett sought assistance from his Realtor and fiancée, Amy Owens. After some digging, Owens put Lockett into contact with the previous owners of the home, Leah and Lou Morse. Saving 1st Lt Wilson’s Jacket Lt. Wilson. According to Morse, her father was a 1st Lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corps. Throughout WWII, he led a group of ambulances that shuttled wounded soldiers between hospitals and the battlefield. When Leah Morse and her husband moved out of the home in 2013, she said, they were confident they had everything out of the attic. “I had no clue it got left behind; it had to have gotten lost in the shuffle of the move,” Morse said. “It’s kind of embarrassing,” Morse admitted. Morse also said she was relieved when Lockett contacted her about the duffel bag full of memorabilia, saying she instantly ran to look for the bag because she was sure she had packed it. “To me, the uniform is priceless,” Morse said. “I have memories of me wearing the wooden shoes as a child.” Morse also said the return of the jacket was incredible, calling Lockett “a special type of person.” “It just shows what kind of guy Jason is,” Morse said. “He could have done so many things… He could have sold it, donated it or even thrown it away. “But he found us and returned it; we were so thrilled to get it back,” Morse said. Lockett said he felt responsible for the uniform, saying, “I have a great appreciation for our veterans and I’m proud to have had a hand in the uniform being reunited with the family of its owner.” Amy Owens and Jason Lockett with the military garb they discovered.
