TM Page 59 April 2016 By Josh Cutlip Arcadia senior Kara Woodard recently started a new sport at Arcadia, bringing sand volleyball into the mix of athletic programs for the high school. Woodard is attending Arizona State University in the fall to play on the Sun Devil sand volleyball team. She found an interest in the sport after playing indoor, and realized her passion was in the sand rather than on the court. “Once I had switched from indoor volleyball to sand volleyball, I fell in love with the sport. I wanted the chance for other players at my school to see how great of a sport it is,” said Woodard. After starting a sand volleyball club last year, Woodard thought she could take her idea one step further. “That led to my idea of making it an official varsity sport for girls interested in competing at a higher level,” said Woodard. Athletic Director and Vice Principal Kevin Mooney also aided in the inception of the team and Woodard said, “I will forever be thankful for that.” Kyle Allen stepped into the head coach position for the sand team and brings along a lengthy past in the sport. “This is my first year coaching sand volleyball. I have been the varsity assistant for indoor for 12 years and coached indoor club volleyball for almost a decade,” said Allen. “Kara is the one who initially approached our athletic director and said there is a need for this sport on campus. She created excitement around the sport. I think a lot of our indoor players were hesitant, but she is such a positive force that many were willing to give it a shot and realize they love it. Fortunately, Mr. Mooney has been incredibly supportive of our program as well.” Although there is currently only a girls team, Woodard hopes that it will expand into something for boys, and she also hopes that Arcadia will implement a boys indoor volleyball team in the future. Whether that wish comes true or not, Woodard is proud to be leaving Arcadia after having left her mark on the high school’s athletic program. “It means the world to me that I am able to leave something I am passionate about at Arcadia; I love all my teammates and am so grateful that they were willing to be a part of such a new sport at Arcadia. I am also thankful to Mr. Mooney for allowing me to make a team, as well as Coach Kyle Allen for coaching us,” said Woodard. According to Coach Allen, Woodard is a motivated student athlete who has leadership qualities that sur pass expectations. “It’s an incredible benefit to me as well as the rest of the team to have an athlete like Kara. Not only does she push hard to be the best athlete every day, but she’s the equivalent of having another coach on the sand,” said Allen. As for the future of the sand volleyball team (after Woodard graduates), Allen has a positive outlook. “It’s my goal to ensure this sport grows at Arcadia. We have a young team overall and I think more athletes will become involved as they see the potential to compete with and against some of the best athletes in the state.” The sand team plays almost every Monday and Wednesday at Scottsdale Ranch Park, from mid March until late April.
