After her school day at Veritas Preparatory School, she participates in golf and soccer. She’s also a part of her school’s Community Service Club and Venture Crew.” This 17-year-old also recently had another commitment under her belt: striving to become Student of the Year through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Student of the Year campaign is brand new for the Arizona chapter of LLS. In its first year, the campaign saw great success. Their Grand Finale celebration was held on March 25, where 10 other groups, including Lauren’s, revealed how much they raised for LLS research and prevention. Lauren heard about the Student of the Year campaign through her college advisor. She was nominated, filled out her application, and started her own group, which she called Team Great Hearts. She named her team after her school, which is part of the Great Hearts school management organization. Team Great Hearts was comprised of Lauren, her mother, and nine other students and adults. The group then sent out emails to local businesses, friends and family asking for donations to go toward LLS. Each team set out to raise money. Whoever raised the most became Student of the Year and won a $2,500 scholarship to the college or university of their choice. Lauren’s goal was to raise $10,000. The campaign lasted six weeks, from February 11 until March 25. During that time, Lauren met a special little girl by the name of Taylor Souza. Taylor started combating Acute Myeloid Leukemia when she was just 4 years old. Now, at 10, Taylor is in remission and is happy and healthy. “At first, I really wanted to win. I’m a very competitive person. But after meeting Taylor and hearing her mom tell Taylor’s story, it wasn’t about winning anymore. It was about bringing awareness to this cause,” Lauren said. Lauren said that although the competition was difficult, it was also a gratifying experience. “[This level of commitment to something outside of school] is tough for kids, especially in their junior year of school…We are very proud of her,” said LeAnne Murphy, Lauren’s mother. Once all of the money is collected, the Student of the Year will be announced at the Grand Finale celebration. The money is put toward research and support for families and patients, as well as five research projects that are based out of the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. In the future, Lauren plans to stay in touch with the LLS. After high school, she plans on applying to the United States Naval Academy and working toward a career in engineering.
