Page 45 April 2016 By Emily Balli Arcadia High School celebrated diversity and culture from around the world with the fourth annual Inter national Culture Week in late February. The students involved decorated the school and set up different tables and posters to educate their classmates about different traditions, languages, foods, festivals and religions from around the world. Twenty st udents f rom the International Club, 30 students from the Arcadia Student Advisory Board and a handful of faculty members took about two months to prepare for the event. Arashdeep Kaur, junior and president of the ASAB said she became involved in the event and the Board because she wanted to help promote awareness of different cultures at AHS. “My family is from India and I’m connected to the customs and festivals my family celebrated back home, but I noticed that many students here are not aware about different cultures,” Kaur said. Nina Valetic, co-president of the ASAB said many students that participated enjoyed the event and found it informational as well. “Our feedback was great,” Valetic said. “Because it’s in the middle of campus, everyone noticed the event and was able to walk through it. I’ve overheard students and staff noting how interesting the different facts were, especially pertaining to religions and languages. They discussed how they didn’t know some of these cultural practices even existed.” Each day of the event revolved around a different aspect of world culture. The first day focused on languages from around the world and how many people speak each language. At some of the booths, Arcadia students were speaking in their first language. On the second day of the event, students were able to learn about different religions and what each religious group practices and believes. The third day was focused on explaining the meaning of all the different festivals, customs and rituals from various cultures. On the final day, a cultural fair was held and various local cultural groups performed for the students. The India Association of Phoenix performed a traditional Holi dance to close the three-day event. Valetic said her favorite part of the event was the dance performances because it drew a large crowd. “International Club was solely in charge of Friday’s culture fair,” Emma Traynor, junior at AHS and head of the International Club said. “We made passports that were stamped at all the tables and passed out snacks. At each table the person in charge told their visitors an interesting fact, so by the time [students] finished, they had learned something interesting from every place.” Kevin Mooney, vice principal and athletic director at AHS thinks that the students involved have successfully welcomed the diversity that is present on the AHS campus with the week-long event. “We have a very diverse world, and I think Arcadia is a very diverse school. And as such, I think our Student Advisory Board and the International Club have worked very hard the last few years to develop a greater tolerance, acceptance and understanding of the different cultures on the Arcadia campus,” Mooney said. Traynor said International Club is looking forward to continuing the event for years to come. “International Club loves this event. Every year it’s our big contribution, so we can really get to the whole school because it’s not an everyday club,” Traynor said. “We definitely plan on doing it in the future. When [the current members] leave, our officers are going to prep the next year’s officers so they can get ready for their year too.” AHS holds fourth annual International Culture Week More than 50 AHS students were involved in preparing the week-long event.
