Page 38 April 2016 RETIREMENT NOW WHAT? By Jean Hodgson Can you picture yourself driving a busload of lively children in Phoenix area traffic on a daily basis? The schedule is rigid. Parents expect their kids to be picked up at a specific time, and the school expects students to arrive before the bell rings for class. And then there’s the first and foremost concern: safety. Does this scenario sound appealing to you? Driving a school bus isn’t for everyone, which makes the match of skills and a friendly partnership between the driver and his passengers extra special. Arcadia News regularly features Teachers We Love. Ed Cook is the Director of Transportation at Christ Lutheran Church and School, and would be a fitting candidate for School Bus Drivers We Love. Although others may wonder how he finds satisfaction doing something that many consider stressful – especially at a time in his life when he could easily be retired – Ed lights up when you ask him what he likes about his job. How did his career path lead to bus driving? The church he was attending had a day school, but they were without a bus driver and the new school year was about to start. Their search became desperate, so Ed decided to help out, driving both the morning and evening routes while still running his business in between. Eventually, this led to him becoming a certified Department of Public Safety instructor who is qualified to train drivers both in the classroom and behind the wheel. He was a great fit to move into his current position at Christ Lutheran where he is responsible for the maintenance of all the buses and vans, driver certification, bus evacuation drills, and bus safety classes for students. On top of all of this, his ability to relate to the students has resulted in invitations to speak to classes on Veteran’s Day and share with the youngest students what it means to serve your country. One of his first-grade riders had this to say about Mr. Cook. “He is kind. And I like him because he is likeable. He warns you about safety. And he tells jokes sometimes.” Business man chooses new career over retirement Ed Cook is the Director of Transportation at Christ Lutheran Church and School.
