The company’s humble beginnings all started with a single food cart in Madison Square Park. In 2004, Shake Shack put down roots with a permanent location inside the park, dishing out high quality burgers, hot dogs, crinkle fries and of course, shakes. Since then, the company has become one of the fastest growing restaurant chains, with locations scattered across the United States, as well as internationally. The brand’s expansion has finally reached the Sonoran Desert as it just debuted its 50th location in Scottsdale Fashion Square, followed by a location at Uptown Plaza in Phoenix. Another Shake Shack will be constructed at Kierland Commons in Scottsdale later this year. At the Scottsdale Fashion Square location, guests are welcomed from the outside by a large shade structure that overhangs a patio adorned with ample seating, a fire pit and a foosball table. The shade structure is reminiscent of the f lagship Shake Shack location in New York and is built with long planks that are comprised of recycled rice husks. In an effort to be sustainable, the reclamation theme is seen throughout the interior as well with mushroom wood and wood sourced from an old tobacco barn. Besides being an ideal place to lounge during patio season, what’s all of the fuss about? First and foremost, attention is placed on sourcing quality ingredients, some of which are local. Shake Shack is known for their freshly ground 100 percent Angus beef, which entirely omits hormones and antibiotics. With the growing concern over genetically modified ingredients, Shake Shack compliments their burgers with non-GMO potato buns. This focus on ingredients is reflected in the flavor of the burgers, which doesn’t taste overly processed or like it’s been baking under a heat lamp for hours. It tastes like a burger should— fresh, juicy and mouthwateringly delicious. The portion sizes also feel appropriate, with burgers available in a simple single or double format. The ShackBurger is piled just high enough with lettuce, tomato and their proprietary ShackSauce. The SmokeShack adds Niman Ranch bacon, chopped cherry pepper and their signature sauce. For the vegetarians out there, the ’Shroom Burger substitutes beef for a crisp-fried portobello mushroom. And if you’re looking to skip the red meat, the Chick’n Shack layers crispy chicken breast with fresh lettuce, tangy pickles and a buttermilk herb mayonnaise. Flat Top Dogs are also available as Vienna beef or chicken, with all the accouterments. The only side dish offered is the crinkle cut fries made with Yukon potatoes, with an option to place melted American cheese on top. Their eponymous shakes are made with a foundation of dense, frozen custard that’s spun fresh daily and made from real sugar instead of corn syrup. Standard f lavors consist of vanilla, chocolate, salted caramel, black and white, strawberry, peanut butter or fair-trade coffee. What’s more, there’s a Shake of the Week using a rotating flavor of frozen custard. Guests have the option to make their shake malted or add whipped cream. The custard is also employed in other frozen delights that include floats and a sundae-like concoction known as a “Concrete.” Reminiscent of Dairy Queen’s Blizzards (but exponentially better), this treat blends an array of delicious mix-ins with the frozen custard. Beers and wines are available on tap, with many that are local. There’s also an exclusive Shackmeister Ale produced exclusively for Shake Shack from Brooklyn Brewery. While you’re out embracing Arizona’s perfect spring weather with a burger and an iced cold one, you don’t have to worry about leaving your four-legged friend at home. Not only is Shake Shack’s patio dog friendly, they also have a menu catered specifically to canines, which includes dog bones from Bocce’s Bakery or a Pooch-ini which consists of a single dog biscuit in a small cup of vanilla custard with peanut butter sauce. Given that Shake Shack has maintained a steady flow of customers since its arrival in Arizona, it’s safe to say that the dining destination has already secured a local following and will likely become a fast-casual fixture for many Phoenicians. Page 31 April 2016 Gimme 5: Places to eat downtown before catching a game Mother Bunch Brewing Pizza Studio Fez Majerle’s Cibo By Josh Cutlip With baseball season officially starting this month, many of us will head downtown to Chase Field for a little entertainment. The stadium may house some delicious food with their recent additions of LoLo’s and America’s Taco Shop, but if you’re not a fan of ballpark cuisine, where are you supposed to eat? I have five suggestions for some great pre-game grub in the downtown area. 5. Mother Bunch Brewery This modest, warehouse-style restaurant offers delectable food with an array of options. They brew their own beer, and they serve burgers, salads and different types of sandwiches that will hold you over while you watch the game. My suggestion is to get the 7th Street Sliders so you can sample all of the delicious flavors they have to offer. They have a unique hickory-smoked chicken option topped with tangy mustard, a spicy tri-tip steak with poblanos and pepper jack cheese, and the classic beef burger with caramelized onions, plus many more. And since it’s only a two-minute drive from Chase Field, it makes a perfect pre-game meal. 4. Pizza Studio Standing right between Chipotle and Urban Outfitters at CityScape, this restaurant should not be passed up. This pizza spot is unique because you get to make your own pizza with a large selection of toppings. Starting with the crust, you can get rosemary, firecracker (which has a kick), flax seed, or original, and yes there is a gluten-free option. Then you move on to the sauces and toppings, where your creativity takes over and you can create a delicious barbecue chicken pizza, a pesto pizza with tomato and peppers, or a classic pepperoni. The great thing about Pizza Studio is that you can add as many toppings as you want to your personal-sized pizza, and it’s all under $9. Great pizza with a great price and a great taste? Sounds great to me! 3. Fez Only a couple of light rail stops from Chase Field, Fez gives a taste of Roosevelt Row while keeping the price low. Every Sunday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and again at 10:30 p.m. to close is happy hour. At this time, you can get well, draft and bottle beer, house wine, and signature margaritas for $4, plus $2 off all appetizers. They have delicious street tacos from the appetizer menu, and cinnamon-dusted sweet potato fries that you must try. You can get a burger, salad, one of their signature meals, or even grab a chicken phyllo packet (my personal favorite). It has all the ingredients you need like spinach, feta, red peppers and chicken, baked into deliciously flaky phyllo dough. Whether it’s game day, or your day off, Fez is a yes on my list. 2. Majerle’s Sports Grill If you enjoy the classic game day cuisine, then look no further than Majerle’s Sports Grill. With its first location on Second Street, just a few blocks from the ballpark, there is nothing keeping you away from some delicious burgers and entrees. You can start off your meal with a platter of finger foods like potato skins, chips and salsa, or some chicken wings and a side of ranch. Majerle’s is located in the oldest commercial building in the city, which was built in 1891. Since then, the building has hosted a saloon, drugstore, and even a trading post, but now it’s home to delicious food and a bunch of flat screens so you can enjoy multiple games at once. 1. Cibo Hidden away on the corner of Fillmore and Fourth Avenue, the quaint Italian feel of this restaurant sets the scene for a somewhat upscale dining experience. Cibo has the best pizza in Phoenix (in my opinion), and it’s surrounded with tasty appetizers and sweet desserts. The smaller pizza size is big enough to fill you up, or you can even share if you’re feeling generous, but chances are you won’t want to because it’s that good. My favorite pizzas are the Siena and Genova. Both are white pizzas, however they do offer a whole other list of pizzas with sauce. The Genova has basil pesto, roasted potatoes, onions and grated parmigiano; the Siena is topped with zucchini, spek (which is similar to prosciutto), and pecorino cheese. There are over 20 pizzas for you to choose from, but you can’t leave without a delicious crepe filled with Nutella and mascarpone cheese, or maybe you’d rather have it with vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit? Whatever your favorite flavor is, Cibo is bound to have something you like. Choosing a good pre-game meal can be tricky, but if you find the right one and your team starts winning, you may want to think about becoming a regular.
