PAT I O Page 27 April 2016 By Kelly Potts Think of Arizona and a few characteristics quickly come to mind: sunny weather, sunsets and desert terrain. Combine all of these and it makes for a great hike around the state of Arizona. Aravaipa Canyon Preserve Located in southeast Arizona, between Safford and Winkelman, this area offers an 11-mile hike through a perennial stream. Hikers are rewarded with views of limestone walls, cottonwoods, bighorn sheep and very few crowds. Browns Peak While this hike may be an adventure to get to, the views of Flagstaff are worth it in the end. The turnoff for the Lone Pine Trailhead is about an hour northeast of Phoenix, with the last 20 miles going through rough terrain. Once you’re up top, enjoy panoramic views as far as the snowy peaks in Flagstaff on a clear day. Boynton Canyon Trail #47 The trailhead outside the entrance to Enchantment Resort leads to one of Sedona’s vortex sites, Boynton Canyon. This 5-mile, round-trip hike presents colorful canyon views, a varied landscape of Gambel oak, manzanita, Arizona alder and ancient cliff ruins overhead. Camelback Mountain The hike starts from Echo Canyon Trailhead and doesn’t kid around before if starts climbing. The climb to the top gains 1,264 feet in 1.2 miles. The best time of day for the hike is early morning or at least an hour before sunset to avoid the peak heat of the day. Hugh Norris Trail Popular for viewing su nsets, wildflowers and wildlife across the dense cactus forest, at nearly 4.9 miles long (one way), this trail is the longest in the Tucson Mountain District. It climbs steadily up to Wasson Peak for 360-degree views of the city, including a gander at the tallest peak in town, Mount Lemmon, to the east. Havasu Falls Does the amazing sight of turquoise waterfalls in the Grand Canyon sound like a perfect hike? The waterfalls lie within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. From the trailhead it’s an 8-mile hike into the small village of Supai and then another 2 miles to the campground. Hamburg Trail The trailhead begins just outside the visitor center at Ramsey Canyon Preserve in the Huachuca Mountains. This, 5.6- mile round-trip hike leads to a stunning scenic overlook in the Coronado National Forest. From there, hikers can enjoy the view or continue on for additional trails. Always remember to be prepared for a long hike. Wear appropriate shoes and clothes, bring plenty of water and stay on the paths that are provided.
