Don’t be surprised if you develop seasonal or year-round allergies if you have recently moved to Phoenix or if you are symptom-free for years and suddenly develop an irritation to the elements. The good news is there are more effective, over-the-counter options to treat seasonal allergies than ever before. Treat with over-the-counter relief first Start with a non-drowsy antihistamine, such as Zyrtec or Claritin or their generic brands. Benadryl works well, but also can cause sleepiness, so use it with caution. The symptoms we associate with allergies are caused when histamines – chemicals from our immune systems – are released into the body when exposed to pollen or other allergens. Antihistamines stabilize the immune system, block histamines and so reduce symptoms. You can also try a decongestant or a combination decongestant/antihistamine. A decongestant does not block histamines but reduces the symptoms by squeezing the blood vessels and making them smaller. This reduces blood flow to the lining of the nasal cavity, diminishes swelling and makes your nose less stuffy. Decongestants should be used with caution if you have hypertension because they can make your blood pressure go up and can cause narrow angle glaucoma or prostate problems because they will impede urine flow. Check with your primary care provider if you are unsure. If one allergy medication doesn’t help, try another because our bodies respond in different ways to different medications. Reducing your exposure also can help. Avoid places that trigger allergies such as along the canal or under trees. Use a HEPA filter in your bedroom and other places throughout the house. Use an air conditioning filter that traps allergens. Keep windows closed, especially at night while you are sleeping. Pets can be pollen carriers. Keep them out of the bedroom, and wipe them down when they come in the house. Cold versus allergies Cold symptoms and allergy symptoms can often start the same way. How can you tell the difference? Cold – Symptoms include a fever and aches or pains, and symptoms will disappear in about five days. Allergies – Nasal discharge will be clear and no fever will be present. Symptoms will last more than seven days and will be worse when outside. Both allergies and colds can progress into infections. If symptoms last more than seven days, particularly with a productive cough, facial pain or fever, you should be evaluated by a physician. Allergies also can lead to problems with asthma, even in people with no history of it. Asthma symptoms include cough with exertion or physical activity, a nighttime cough or wheezing. See your physician if you have any of these symptoms. Peak allergy season in Arizona runs from March to about June, or when the summer heat kicks in. If you are suffering more than normal, your physician can also refer you to an allergist for more specialized treatment. — Jackie Doris, M.D., is a primary care physician at HonorHealth Medical Group, 4131 N. 24th St., Ste.
