Indian School Road, Phoenix AZ 85018 Page 53 March 2016 By Emily Bali For the first time in seven years, students and faculty at Arcadia High School are working together to institute a speech and debate team. Although the school had a speech and debate team in the past, it took a seven-year hiatus because students and faculty had difficulty balancing the team with other extracurricular activities like sports and drama. Clayton Guy, teacher at AHS and coach for the speech and debate team, says he’s found he has to approach this like a year- round sport. This way students understand the level of commitment required for the team. The team started to develop within the past two years, but only recently became more established. “We had some very unselfish students that took the time to put in place what we needed for speech and debate, even though they knew that by the time we had it established, they would’ve graduated and wouldn’t be able to benefit from all their hard work,” said Assistant Principal Kevin Mooney. Guy said that the team started as a group of 35 juniors that would watch videos of speech and debate competitions at lunch. One of his former students, Kelly Rice, approached him with the idea to start their own team and asked if he would sponsor it. “We started to participate in competitions,” said Guy. “They don’t just meet at lunch; they actually do research. They research different topics and different resolutions and then they go and debate.” Guy noted how students have found a true passion for the practice, “When the kids are at the competitions, they live, eat and breathe speech and debate.” Sophomore and president of the team, Natalie Massimi and freshman Una Smoole are excited to be a part of the newly founded team and hope it can continue to grow in the coming years. “I’m passionate about this club,” said Massimi. “I wish more people could get involved.” Members of the team take one month to research a specific topic before they compete and debate the topic at a tournament. Issues the team tackles are current topical issues like Russian sanctions, gun control, GMOs and private prisons. “It’s a lot of work and commitment but it does pay off once you get to the tournaments,” said Smoole. “Researching can be really interesting.” Mooney said he is looking forward to the growth of the speech and debate team. He said that when he attends the events, he finds the “intellectual debate as something that is as exciting as what you see on a sports field.” Mooney added, “I look forward to the day when we judge the quality of the school not just by the football team, but also by the quality of speech and debate.” Natalie Massimi and Una Smoole are the force behind AHS Speech and Debate. 3"
