All the way back to middle school social studies class. Do you remember how you learned about the American Revolution? Or the Civil Rights movement? Penny Sandstrom and the Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center have found a new way to teach these subjects to their students: shadow puppets. Through the help of workshops developed by the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Sandstrom and a few other teachers learned new ways to integrate the arts into other subjects taught at ANLC. One of these workshops was Shadow Journeys: Exploring History through Shadow Puppetry. How it works is this: The puppets are created using dark paper or card stock and are attached to small sticks or skewers. These make silhouettes of characters, props and/or scenery. The theater is typically a dark background that frames a lighter screen made of translucent paper. The students then hide behind the screen while           performance, and the other students act out whatever scene they are learning about at the time. Before the puppet show begins, students have studied some concept of history, doing in-depth research and deciding what aspect they would like to present. Sandstrom administers a rubric provided by the Kennedy Center so that students know exactly what they should portray in their puppet shows. Sandstrom has implemented shadow puppets a handful of times this year, because of the amount of material and the many different strategies that can be used to teach each unit of study. “I also choose to limit the use of some strategies so that students are still excited by the opportunities to use them and less likely to tire of doing the same thing over and over,” Sandstrom said. Sandstrom has been teaching social studies at ANLC for 12 years. A few years ago, ANLC decided to assimilate the              philosophy of “cooperative learning, multi- age classrooms and project-based instruction.” “Embarking on this art integration journey has sometimes been uncomfortable for our teachers and staff, which comes with trying something new or taking risks. Mrs. Sandstorm jumped right in, integrating strategies such as tableau and shadow puppets,” said Benjamin Roat, principal at ANLC. So what sort of content is portrayed through these shadow puppet shows? “I demonstrated this art form to the class early in the year using a script from one of Aesop’s fables and puppet patterns that had been provided to me at the training [at the workshop] last July,” Sandstrom said. Once the students knew what to do, they moved on to social studies concepts, such as the American Revolution, the Boston Tea Party, and World War II. Recently, one of the third- and fourth-grade teachers was inspired by the shadow puppet idea and decided to have her class tell the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. “The students wrote scripts on the timeline of his life and used various quotes from his life,” Roat said. “A student also created a photo slideshow to play while another student sang a song to wrap up the puppet show. It was incredible!” Soon, the students will be working on the Civil Rights movement, and Sandstrom hopes to utilize the shadow puppet show to portray that important time in our history.
