Archery. Roasting marshmallows over an open fire. I never went to summer camp, but my goodness, it sounds like fun. Growing up, my best friend went to summer camp for two weeks every summer. She had the most strict and serious parents I’d ever met, but it was as if every summer they just released her into the wild to create childhood memories. I was always surprised and a tiny bit jealous. Watching her prepare was intense. She’d spend a week with her long list of Necessary Camp Items and eventually make a big deal out of every item that had to be purchased and explain how they had to be properly packed. I always marveled at the required items and was even more stunned that a pubescent girl was supposed to get by for two weeks with one bath towel. Saying goodbye was emotional, as if not talking on the phone for two weeks could possibly stop our hearts. We’d pinky swear to write letters and to tell each other every bit of what we missed in each other’s lives as soon as she returned. We were 12. Everything in life was dramatic and emotional and oh, so super intense. The summer before eighth grade, Susan returned and without even a phone call, rode her bike to my house. I’ll never forget seeing her at my front door, so excited that life was back to normal. We rode to gather our other friends and we took off for the winding path and stone bridge where we spent most of our middle school years. We were all ears for her stories of a variety show, swimming in the lake, and the fact that she had found the absolute love of her life. Before long we were running down the list of middle school gossip that had continued on without her. These are the summer moments I wouldn’t trade for anything. Although it was Susan who went to camp, it was as if we all lived it with her and those moments made a lasting impact on all of us. Twenty-one years later, even though we live in two different states, my best friend and I continue our middle school summer tradition each August by gathering at my house for three days, toasting to our friendship and spending way too many hours chatting in the sun. Now, however, we aren’t filling each other in on two weeks of summer, but on the 362 days of the past year. Summer helped create our lifelong friendship and I’m so grateful. Although summer might seem far away, this month in our annual Arcadia News Summer Camp Guide, we get you ready to plan your kid’s schedule, to pack those extra sunny afternoons with educational, high energy and creative entertainment.! Not only will you find an abundance of summer camps to choose from, but you will also find ways to fill the hours in between. Those school-free days will be here before you know it and you better be prepared. I know I hate finding myself listening to “Mom, I’m bored,” every June. Enjoy the beautiful weather and lots of baseball this month my friends! And thank you for reading Arcadia News. EDITOR’S NOTES
