Annie Boothe moved to Arizona from Houston, Texas where she coached privately for younger athletes as well as adults. Before that she competed at the collegiate level as the captain of the tennis team at Emporia State University in Kansas. Boothe has been with a tennis racket since age 1, and she still plays today. After making some connections around Arcadia, she found herself at the high school with a head coaching job and a vision for success. With tryouts in the next few weeks, Boothe looks to apply her experience to a new group of students. “You really have to observe. I think it’s one of my strengths,” said Boothe. She also mentioned that the tryout process is conducted using a ladder system where the athletes play each other in multiple matches. “It’s a lot of match play. It’s a lot of walking around and observing, because at the high school level, you can get good athletes that can make pretty decent tennis players with some good coaching and drill,” said Boothe. Boothe’s coaching style is to cater to the needs of each athlete, “You coach to each individual,” she said. Boothe anticipates seeing players who are playing tennis for the first time, as well as players who have had lessons and played for years. She believes these two kinds of athletes mix well on the court. “You can sometimes pull off some pretty good doubles teams,” she said. In college, Boothe studied science, focusing on anatomy and the movement of the body. However, she found a passion for education after coaching tennis and working as a floater teacher in the Madison School District in Phoenix. While she hopes to apply her teaching methods to the courts, she also plans on expanding the boys tennis program to make it welcoming for anyone. “I know in previous years [the program] hasn’t produced the numbers, but I think word of mouth in a high school spreads quickly,” said Boothe. “So if you get some motivation, and you get some wins under your belt, the next thing you know, we might have a chance at state.” She plans to promote her squad not only at the high school, but other local outlets, such as the Village or parks around the neighborhood. Serving up a solid team of tennis players is no easy feat, but Boothe is hoping to rally up some wins. ARCADIANEWS.COM VISIT US ONLINE NOW!
