Page 4 February 2016 Gaining a new perspective By Amanda Goossen A few weeks ago, my family experienced a rather turbulent morning. If you have school-age kids, or have ever had school-age kids under your roof, you might understand. I woke up a little less rested than I had hoped. I was on a deadline and overwhelmed. My parents had recently moved halfway across the country and I was feeling blue. My daughter, who wakes up with gusto, was sitting at the breakfast table, pressuring all of us to hurry up. She had places to go, people to see, things to accomplish. My son had his head on the table. He wakes up a bit slower than the rest of us. His cereal was getting soggy and he was trying to tune out his sister. I was ushering everyone through the morning. “Make your bed…brush your teeth!” I shouted a little louder than necessary, listing everything they do every single day, yet somehow need to be reminded. I stood in my bedroom in my knee-length pink robe and Adidas socks, staring at my dresser. Did I really have to get dressed? Could I return home in 30 minutes and just shimmy under the covers? Why wasn’t there a carpool? I irritably pulled on my Lululemon leggings. Struggled with my knock-off hooded sweatshirt. We all know there’s no getting back in bed. I needed another cup of coffee. Something jolted my memory. The dog had to be at the groomer. Before morning drop off. Ugh! Who planned this!? Suddenly we were driving down Indian School: dog whining loudly in the back of the car, drooling all over the last row of seats; daughter pleading with me to go faster; son staring out the window, drinking hot cocoa, which I bribed him with to get him in the car at a reasonable pace without further complaint. I looked in the rearview window at my life. This morning had become the opening scene of a sitcom. I dropped off the dog. I dropped off the kids. I drove back down Indian School. And then I made a quick decision to change my day. Instead of going home to shower and get to work, I went straight toward Camelback Mountain. I moved my aching knees up the path. Blasted Adele through my headphones and made my way up that mountain. I fought hard for every step, because recently my daily hiking had withered down to a once, every other week, event. And when I reached the 16th marker, I looked over the edge, thankful I had found the energy. Yes, I was tired. But I looked at our city and was at peace. I was thankful for a chaotic but beautiful life where dreams come true, solid friendships are aplenty and the greatest man I’ve ever known calls me his wife. There were silver linings everywhere. I’m so thankful I live in this beautiful little corner of the world, amongst citrus trees, neighborhood restaurants and a long winding canal, perfect for weekend bike rides. I hope this February you too can find the beauty within the chaos of life. Have a great month my friends! And thank you for reading Arcadia News. EDITOR’S NOTES
