The program, which has collected over 2 million pounds of citrus over the past sixteen years, was put into place as a scout service project as an effort to avoid waste and help control the Valley’s roof-rat population. United Food Bank, while not accepting drop-off donations, is performing controlled gleaning of local trees. Trees will be tested for ACP before gleaning and is $10 per tree. By Jenet Simmons For decades, each January through March, Arcadia residents have happily donated their excess citrus to the St. Mary’s Food Bank and the Arcadia Citrus Program. This year, due to the Asian citrus psyllid quarantine, there are new restrictions to food banks and their ability to accept any and all citrus donations. Asian citrus psyllid is a tiny pest, as big as the head of a pin, which can spread the citrus greening disease. The greening disease can potentially kill all types of citrus trees including grapefruit, lemon and orange throughout Arizona. The infected trees have been verified alongside public roads, backyards of neighborhood homes and commercial groves. In addition to the quarantine in Maricopa County, six counties across the state of Arizona have been quarantined by the Arizona Department of Agriculture. The ACP quarantine restricts food banks from accepting citrus for safety reasons to ensure they do not take part in spreading ACP. While this news may sound unnerving to those of us who eat citrus from our backyards, rest assured that the citrus from a tree containing ACP is safe to eat. St. Mary’s Food Bank is accepting donations through approved commercial growers as well as through residents partaking in their controlled gleaning programs.
