Black and Sedona red. And now, Sedona red and teal? The Arizona Diamondbacks have upgraded their uniforms for the first time since eliminating the old purple and teal jerseys, this time paying homage to the 2001 championship team. The snakes hosted a VIP event on December 3 to showcase the revolutionary look and to officially kick off what they are calling, “D-Backs Evolution.” “The concept really was nine years in the old uniform, nine years in the current uniform, and it’s time to try and bridge the two together,” said Diamondbacks CEO, Derrick Hall. These jerseys will be the first to display the players’ numbers on the front since the 2006 season. They feature an arched font on the front, instead of the traditional straight font, and they also have the old logo of the rattlesnake with a baseball in its mouth on the sleeve. A lot of the players are excited about the new look, especially because they got to help in the design process. First baseman and MVP runner-up Paul Goldschmidt said the team was consulted every step of the way. “They took a group of players and got our input,” said Goldschmidt. He thinks some of the designs were based off of the All-Star Game jerseys from 2011. “It’s definitely exciting. They’re different, but I think it’s cool to be a part of something new and different and be the first team to kind of step out of the box.” Former Diamondback and special assistant to the president and CEO, Luis Gonzales, is also excited about the new blend of colors. “It’s a different look. We’re the first team to do it in Major League Baseball, so we hope that it catches on.” Gonzales went on to talk about how important it is to have some of the championship team members back with the organization. “Randy [Johnson] and [Matt Williams] saw it earlier and they loved it, so it’s an exciting time for us. Some of the old players are here and they got to see it, and we’re excited about it too.” Hall said that the jerseys were not made to sell merchandise, but rather to start an evolution with the team. “I think fans are going to be excited about this, but ultimately you’ve got to win in them. Whatever you’re wearing out there on the field, you’ve got to win. That’ll build the most excitement,” said Hall. Goldschmidt agrees saying that winning in the new style will help build excitement. “Hopefully maybe ten, 20 years from now they’ll be looking back on these jerseys and saying, ‘Oh that’s when they won the championship in 2016, or ’17 or ’18,’” he said. Of course, putting the right team on the field helps with winning that championship. The uniforms aren’t the only things that look different about the 2016 Diamondbacks. The acquisitions of starting pitchers, Shelby Miller and Cy Young winner Zack Greinke happened within ten days of the unveiling of the new look. Derrick Hall said on the night of the unveiling, “Over the next couple of weeks, the focus is really right here with the free agents that are available. We don’t want to take away from this core team that we already have in place.” The Diamondbacks did just that, and now heading into the 2016 season, the “evolution” is here.
