Here’s the schedule for January: January 8 - Meet Me in St. Louis January 15 - Paulie January 22 - For the Love of Benji January 29 - E.T. Participants are required to have an active Recreation Pass for these activities and the other Devonshire amenities. The annual fee is $20 for a resident and $40 for a nonresident. That’s a bargain when you see that it also includes access to the fitness center, computer lab, billiards, Ping-Pong, board games, a walking program and more. Some popular annual events are Music in the Park, Cinco de Mayo, Senior Safety Fair and Octoberfest. And don’t forget to check out all the winter and spring classes offered at the community center by the City of Phoenix Human Services Department. The Center’s theme is “fun places, great spaces.” Between that positive message and all the exciting possibilities available, Arcadia’s seniors should have the means necessary to set a resolution that will make 2016 an enjoyable and memorable year. RETIREMENT NOW WHAT? By Jean Hodgson It’s that time again. We’re all changing the calendar to 2016, so it’s time to consider New Year’s resolutions. When we think about resolutions, we usually associate them with breaking a bad habit, setting goals for ourselves and figuring out how we will be held accountable. That sounds pretty negative, and statistics tell us that most New Year’s resolutions are soon discarded. So what’s a good resolution for senior adults in Arcadia who have a positive spin? A good place to start is to drop by 2802 E. Devonshire Ave., check out the 2016 activities at the Devonshire Senior Center, and make plans to participate in some of them this year. You can jump right in by attending one (or all) of their four upcoming winter trips. Christine Hall, recreation coordinator for City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation, says “The seniors love their field trips, not only for the destination, but more often for the socialization. These trips give seniors who don’t drive and who may not have family nearby an opportunity to enjoy an event they would not otherwise be able to attend.” Here are some of the upcoming winter field trips: Monday, January 4 - Phoenix Zoolights Friday, January 15 - David and Gladys Wright House Tour Sunday, February 14 - Orpheum Theatre and a showing of silent movie Man Trap Monday, February 29 - Irish Cultural Center and Japanese Friendship Garden The f lyer provides the details for these outings. The fees are nominal and include transportation and the opportunity to purchase a restaurant meal as part of the trip. Do you enjoy movies, but are discouraged by today’s prices for admission and popcorn? The Center sponsors free Friday classic Social and artistic offerings at the Devonshire Senior Center
