Page 58 December 2015 By Lindsey Greenwood The Youth Ambassador Exchange Program, sponsored by Phoenix Sister Cities, is accepting applications for the summer 2016 exchange program. The program is a reciprocal six-week summer exchange program for high school sophomores and juniors residing in a Phoenix council district. Selected students will travel to one of Phoenix’s 10 sister cities as youth ambassadors, said Bethany Bennick, the youth and education program manager with the Phoenix Sister Cities. “This program teaches students about cultural awareness. The students develop friendships and become more globally minded youth through participating in this program,” said Bennick. Phoenix Sister Cities selects which countries students will live in. Students live with a host family for three weeks and then host their international counterpart when they visit Phoenix in July, said Bennick. Possible cities that students are sent to include: Calgary, Canada; Catania, Italy; Chengdu, China; Ennis, Ireland; Grenoble, France; Hermosillo, Mexico; Himeji, Japan; Prague, Czech Republic; Ramat-Gan, Israel; and Taipei, Taiwan. “This program allows students to experience a culture deeply. There is a huge difference between being a tourist and being a resident,” said Camryn Lizik, who was sent to Prague as a youth ambassador in the summer of 2015. Lizik was attracted to the program because she wanted to learn about a different culture. “Not only do you learn about a culture through this program but you get to observe how individuals live in their own culture,” said Lizik. This program is privately funded through fundraisers and family contributions. All students can also apply for scholarships to pay for the trip, said Bennick. “Traveling is a great thing to do when you are young,” said Mark Morrissby, who traveled to Catania, Italy as a youth ambassador in 2015. “This trip allows you to become more confident and open minded.” Before departure, students attend five academy session trainings to prepare them for their visit, said Bennick. “Not only are you an ambassador of Phoenix during this trip, but you also represent the United States,” said Morrissby. Applications are available at phoenixsistercities.org and are due by December 18 at 5 p.m. For more information, call 602-534-3751 or email Bethany Bennick at bethany.bennick@phoenix.gov.
