Mia Thompson, an MHP freshman, finds the photo on a server and uploads it. This process goes on every weekday in Joe Kavesdy’s class at MHP. Students upload old Elementary School District files to an online archive for anyone to see – some date back 125 years. “It’s interesting to see the changes and how things are different from the ’90s to now,” Fee said. “It’s really cool being able to see all the old photos and upload them online.” Students have uploaded over 1,000 photos, documents and interviews to the Tumblr hosted archive, and Kavesdy said there are still thousands of documents that need to be uploaded. Kavesdy and Dr. Kerry Clark, principal of MHP who played an integral role in creating the archives, said the project is an attempt by school administrators to engage students in learning about their past and increase their digital literacy. Digital literacy is the ability to create, evaluate, synthesize, analyze and present information in different formats on the computer. “Several people said it was tough to access, organize and categorize the materials when they are in photo albums,” Clark said. “What a great experience for our students to use their 21st century digital literacy to access this array of history. It’s kind of a new way of doing history.” Clark said he was inspired during the summer of 2014 by a similar online archive hosted by Northern Arizona University called Colorado Plateau Archives project. “I thought, ‘What if we could turn it into an archive where people could look things up and post things and really create a rich array of memories?’” Clark said. “We like the project because as a new member of the Madison School District, our students are weaving the new high school into the fabric of the district’s history.” By the fall of 2014, MHP’s first year of operation, students and faculty worked to create an online archive of their own for the Elementary School District. Some elementary school alumni said they find the online database useful in digging for old school photos. Madison Simis Elementary alum, Mr. Rishi Popat, shared his thoughts about the online database in a school press release, “It brought back nostalgic memories of my peers, teachers and school.” Madison Highland Prep students produce online historic archive Madison Highland Prep freshmen scan and upload a photo into the online archive.
