The Café at Scottsdale Bible Church offers choices in delectable food items and pastries, as well as coffee. The Café embodies a calm ambiance amidst shelves lined with inspirational books and home décor empowering positive messages. Functioning as the brains behind the scenes is Chef Tanner Raban. Growing up in Cottonwood, Arizona as one of five children in a single-parent home, Chef Tanner began working at the age of 14 in a local restaurant out of necessity. “I felt bad asking my mom for money, so I got a job knowing that we didn’t have a lot,” Raban said. Acquiring his first job at a young age allowed Chef Tanner to work his way through the many avenues of kitchen work. Raban said, “I purposely worked in most every department I could imagine would help my knowledge in this field – from dishwasher to kitchen pantry, cruise line cook to sous chef and finally, executive chef.” Raban acquired the title of sous chef in his early 20s and continued to climb the culinary career ladder until reaching executive chef status in 2009. Today, Chef Tanner holds the title of kitchen ministry chef at The Café at Scottsdale Bible Church. Chef Tanner’s career journey in the restaurant field blossomed as a result of those who knew him and his talents. Fortunate enough to have been sought out in the past, the acquisition of his new career wasn’t any different. In 2015, good friend and fellow local chef recommended Raban be the consultant to Scottsdale Bible Church in the early stages of developing The Café. Noting the plethora of experience and credibility behind Raban’s career, Executive Pastor Jamie Rasmussen said, “We’re thrilled to have Tanner leading the team at The Café. He is tremendously gifted and we are so fortunate to be able to share his talents with the community. It isn’t by accident, though, that he is here. We made a commitment for The Café to be a place of excellence that the community will want to frequent. Tanner is a vital component to that, and we couldn’t be happier with the results.” Raban said, “I am challenging myself to hire the right people who are culinary trained, writing appropriate protocols and recipes, and finding the vendors that will be the right fit for us.” Tanner is planning to run The Café as a forward moving business. “Outside of the home and the workplace, we want The Café to be a place where community is fostered and friendships are developed,” said Pastor Rasmussen. Arcadia resident Jennifer Martin has achieved balance in her life, despite a personal setback. Martin was diagnosed 12 years ago with multiple sclerosis, a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of the nerve. Her diagnosis led to her study of mindfulness, which she now teaches at A Mindfulness Life Center in Scottsdale. Vision loss, fatigue, pain and varied coordination are some symptoms of MS. It can’t be cured and can last throughout a lifetime, according to WebMD. “My diagnosis affected my life in regards to the challenges of being home with two young kids,” Martin said. “During my first episode I lost vision in one eye. I became more tired and had less energy. I knew I had to have more balance in my life.” Mindfulness is a form of stress reduction and involves being aware of everything that is happening moment-to-moment. You observe thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them as good or bad. Martin often found that she was stressed, but knew that she had to stay well. She decided to take up mindfulness and as a result, a yoga instructor who was teaching the course changed Martin’s life. “The diagnosis has led me to the work I am doing right now,” she said. “It forced me to pursue the life I have always wanted for myself, rather than the life I am supposed to have. I was able to learn mindfulness and share it with others. The diagnosis has really been a gift for me.” She was always interested in the power of positive thinking, but didn’t known much about mindfulness until she took a course by well- known stress reduction expert Jon Kabat-Zinn, which sparked her interest in the topic. Martin described her mission as trying to empower clients to make changes in their lives so that they can experience more peace and calm. Someone who has seen Martin’s work first hand is Anita Welsch, director of A Mindfulness Life Center. “Jennifer has a natural gift with relating to people and helping them on their journey through life,” she said. “Through her meditation classes and also her Mindfulness series she has given people the knowledge and tools to use mindfulness in their daily lives.” Welsch lauded Martin for the way she approached her diagnosis and the way she has lived since then. “When Jennifer took her own personal journey of mindfulness, she saw the positive effects of it. I believe that this is the reason she is so passionate about teaching others. She is encouraging to her students, which helps keep them on track with their own journey.” Penny McLain, one of Martin’s students, benefitted from Martin’s teachings by learning how to live more peacefully. “As a mindfulness coach, Jennifer taught me a new way to live,” she said. “She started by showing me how to slow down. Through her sessions and learning what meditation was and how to do it, I became more peaceful. She taught me how to be kind to myself and how to not obsess over things that had already happened and how to not overthink or try to control the future.” Martin’s goals for reducing stress, balancing her life, and creating more peace around her are reflected through her work, both in how she’s strengthened her own mindfulness, and that of others. “She is an inspiring role model for anyone who may doubt that mindfulness can improve one’s physical and mental health,” McLain said. “Jennifer went from not having her eyesight and not having feeling on one side of her body to running a marathon the next year.” Turning tragedy into triumph Jennifer Martin
