Maybe you’d also like to connect with a group that shares your interest in community service, learning from interesting speakers, or taking short trips together. One way to form new relationships is through church groups that have ministries specifically focused on senior adults. Many churches in our Arcadia neighborhood provide this opportunity in addition to their regular worship services and classes. They also invite and encourage visitors to participate. As I inquired about options for seniors in various churches, I was reassured that membership was not required and that all are welcome. The fellowship group at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, 4455 E. Lincoln Drive, is called Saguaros. They meet the third Thursday of the month for a potluck lunch and entertainment program. The December 17 speaker is Mike Chamberlain and the January 21 entertainment is Lynn Roberts, a celebrity impersonator. The church also sponsors a free monthly community concert series. Saints Alive! at Camelback Bible Church, 3900 E. Stanford Drive, provides one activity a month that has a social aspect, but “ensures that we are more focused outward than inward.” Their January 9 program is entitled World War II, the Holocaust and one Jewish survivor’s long journey to forgiveness. A specialized service at The Episcopal Parish of Christ Church of the Ascension is Duet: Partners in Health and Aging. Coordinated by their parish nurse, this service will connect volunteers with those in need and coordinate the efforts of many area congregations. The nurse also acts as a referral agent and counselor on health issues. Christ Church is located at 4015 E. Lincoln Drive. Arcadia Gospel Fellowship is located at 4233 North 40th Street. You may know them as Mountain View Baptist Church, but in November they observed their 60th anniversary with a celebration called A New Beginning! and a name change, although their affiliation with the Baptist church remains. Their ministry for senior adults is called Young At Heart Luncheon and occurs on the second Tuesday of the month. Valley Presbyterian Church at 6947 E. McDonald Drive sponsors community groups for different age groups. The monthly programming for each level is described in detail on their website. Their specialty for lifelong learners 50 and Better is Encore University, and the winter term for their classes and lecture series begins mid- January. Active Adult Ministry is the group for senior adults at Christ Church Lutheran, 3901 E. Indian School Road. They meet for Bible study on Wednesday mornings, but their luncheon meeting with a program is the first Wednesday of the month. Topics include travel, hobbies and informative speakers from the community. A magician will provide the entertainment for January’s program. They also connect with the fifth- graders at Christ Lutheran School for some of their activities. The Franciscan Renewal Center is at 5802 E. Lincoln Drive and it provided meeting and event space to 474 groups last year. Many of their speakers and workshops are open to local participants, and the Casa also provides retreat opportunities and ongoing counseling and support groups. Interested adults are invited to Discover the Vision events, held twice a month, to learn more about their programs. This is just a sampling of fellowship opportunities in Arcadia.
