The powerful drugs created a loss of feeling in her feet and hands, making simple tasks such as driving and walking a challenge. And as a single mother who was forced to quit working to battle her disease, caring for her then 10-year-old daughter became difficult both physically and financially. “Any child at any age is traumatized by this,” Smith said. “They have a lot to tackle just going through normal childhood things and then on top of that their parents have this disease.” She added, “There is so much I try to hide about my disease, but she knows when I’m suffering and how sick I am.” Today, Smith continues to fight. She is battling Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, but she also has a little help this time thanks to the support from Scottsdale nonprofit Singleton Moms. Founded in 2006 by Arcadia native Jody Farley-Berens, Singleton Moms provides housecleaning, meals, financial aid and support to more than 300 single parents who are battling cancer in Arizona. Recently, Farley-Berens was selected as one of the 2015 Top 10 CNN Heroes. She will receive $10,000 from CNN Worldwide , along with donations from viewers and the chance to be selected as Hero of the Year and earn an additional $100,000, according to a press release. Over the last eight years, CNN has received more than half a million nominations for CNN Heroes. “Being part of CNN Heroes is a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity for a nonprofit organization and we realize now is the time to be serious,” Farley-Berens said. “Our ultimate goal is to always serve more families and this will help us serve more locally.” Farley-Berens also said the exposure will help the organization in its research to expand to another state. Prior to CNN selecting Farley-Berens, she said she and her organization went through an extensive vetting process. “People can feel confident knowing that anybody who gets to that level deserves it for the work they have done and is doing the right things with their funds,” she said. For Smith, the organization has provided everything from Christmas presents for her daughter to groceries and cleaning products, and even meals that are already assembled and ready to be prepared. In fact, the meals are simple enough that her 14-year-old daughter can use the ingredients and follow the instructions to cook for both of them. “This is really the way a nonprofit should run,” said Denise Miller, an accountant and current board president. As a single mother herself, Miller said she became involved with Singleton Moms because of her empathy for the challenges single mothers face and the way in which a cancer diagnosis affects these families. “It’s difficult enough just being a career mom. I couldn’t imagine doing this if I were ill,” Miller said. Farley-Berens said the organization was born after her childhood friend Michelle Singleton – a single mom to four children – was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 32. Farley-Berens and another friend Andy Royal McCandless sprang into action to help their friend by making meals, cleaning her house, paying a bill or two and anything else they could do. The friends soon learned that practical resources for single parents with cancer were nonexistent. Singleton passed away less than a year after her diagnoses and the organization was born. “There was a lot of skepticism about us at first and they’d say, ‘Yeah right, you are going to do all that,’” Farley-Berens said. “We have done exactly what we said we are going to do and we’ve built the trust in the community.” On December 6, the CNN Hero of the Year will be announced during a celebrity tribute hosted by Anderson Cooper at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Farley-Berens will be in attendance at the event, which will air globally. “It’s really special to have made it this far,” Farley-Berens said. “I think Michelle would be incredibly proud, but a little surreal that ‘Wow,’ all of this has come from her journey and what she went through.” Singleton Moms is always in need of volunteers, household necessities, toiletries and even men’s items. They are also collecting toys and gifts suitable for ages ranging from toddlers to teens to distribute around the holidays to the children of parents with cancer.
