Sports are popular at Arcadia. With 19 varsity teams, many athletes dream of taking their sport to the next level and staff help them accomplish that goal. According to NCAA, the rules of recruitment have recently changed. Initially, the required GPA for student- athletes was 2.0. The new minimum acceptance has been raised to 2.3. This rule is effective for students that enroll after August 1, 2016. NCAA now requires student-athletes to focus more on school and receive better grades. Sixteen core classes must be completed by the end of senior year, but now 10 of those classes must be completed before the seventh semester. Rob Reniewicki, head track and field coach of Arcadia, says he does not believe the new ruling is affecting the students on the team. However, as a coach he is not only there to achieve success on the track but help his athletes achieve success in the classroom. “The process all depends on their marks, and as a coach I encourage them to get the best marks they can,” Reniewicki said. “Helping them with the [college] they want [to attend] and the program they want is what it’s all about.” Teresa Fitzsimmons, the college career center advisor, is there to help the students of Arcadia prepare for admission and application to college. Fitzsimmons explained that there must be total compliance with the NCAA Clearinghouse for all high schools. The Clearinghouse, now known as the Eligibility Center, is an organization outside of NCAA that tracks the academic progress of students, which decides if the athlete is eligible to be recruited. According to NCAA, nearly eight million students play sports in high school, and only 460,000 of those students continue to compete in NCAA schools. One of these athletes is recent Arcadia alumnus, John Reniewicki, who was recruited to run track at Arizona State University. John explained that having his father, Rob Reniewicki, as a coach helped him achieve this level of competition. “With his coaching I was able to run to attract attention from Division I schools and ASU, but more importantly his coaching set me on track to continually progress at ASU,” John said. A spokesperson from NCAA added that “A college education is the most rewarding benefit of the student-athlete experience.” AHS prepares for recruitment
