Dr. Christa Corn is a general surgeon with a specialty in breast surgery. She is also an administrator for this treatment, which is called Intraoperative Radiation Therapy, also known as IORT. Used for about a decade in Europe, IORT has also been introduced to several countries around the world, including the United States. “IORT is a procedure in which we can treat early stage breast cancer in one day, at the time of lumpectomy, allowing patients meeting specific selection criteria to replace up to eight weeks of daily radiation treatments with one targeted treatment,” said Corn. IORT is in the top 10 of Cleveland Clinic’s new medical innovations of 2015. The treatment is administered through the Xoft Electronic Brachytherapy System, which Abrazo Health Care is equipped with. This equipment is approved by the Federal Drug Administration, CE marked and licensed in Canada to treat the early stages of breast cancer, which includes stage I and II, Corn commented. “The Xoft System uses a proprietary miniaturized X-ray source, which is inserted into a flexible balloon-shaped applicator that closely matches the size and shape of the patient’s lumpectomy cavity,” Corn explained. A full course of radiation is administered at this time, as is targets cancerous cells, but does not attack healthy tissue such as heart and lung tissue. Corn added that the Xoft System can only be used on patients who are eligible, meaning they were chosen in a selection process and met specific requirements.” Patients able to use IORT may see a cost savings because the treatment period is short. During traditional breast cancer treatment, a surgeon usually removes the cancerous tissue, closes the incision, and then the patient goes home so their wound can heal. After that, the patient has to continue to visit a radiation oncologist for up to eight weeks to receive his or her radiation treatments. If a patient chooses to have IORT, all of this can be done while under anesthesia during a lumpectomy. The radiation is administered directly where the tumor was located, Corn said. IORT can be administered in as little as eight minutes, Corn added. Corn said, “IORT and the Xoft System offer many patient benefits including convenience, lower costs, fewer side effects, and shorter treatment times, which can allow patients to resume normal activities sooner, as compared to traditional treatment. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities – including going to work and caring for their families – within days rather than weeks.” During the procedure, Corn works with “a radiation oncologist to deliver one precise, concentrated dose of radiation to the tumor site at the time of lumpectomy,” she said. Corn hopes IORT will show patients that there are other treatment options that are more cost efficient and require less time. “It is a significant advancement in women’s health, and I expect it will become a more common treatment option for qualified patients in the years ahead,” Corn said regarding IORT. And the 30-year-old certified personal trainer and Nike Master Trainer has done just that. Metzger is the owner of BODI, a high intensity training gym in Scottsdale, and has a reputation for pushing her clients to their limits. “We’re going to f lip tires, slam battle ropes, pick up weights and bang out some pull-ups. Why? Because when you’re dripping in sweat and nearly wiped out, that’s when the magic happens,” Metzger said. But Metzger’s success extends beyond her popular training gym. Earlier this year, she earned the title of Next Fitness Star by Women’s Health magazine. The magazine conducted a nationwide search to find the next big name in fitness. Thousands of submissions were received. Metzger’s made it to the top five. A nationwide vote ensued with the help of a star-studded judging panel, including celebrity trainers and Extreme Weight Loss hosts, Chris and Heidi Powell; NBC’s Today show anchor, Natalie Morales, as well as Today contributor and trainer, Jenna Wolfe; and Women’s Health editor-in-chief, Amy Keller Laird. Metzger learned she was the Next Fitness Star live on the Today show in August. “It was one of those things where you think, ‘It’s not going to happen to me.’ So when my name was called, I was in total shock!” Metzger said. “I still don’t know if it has completely hit me because it just seems so surreal.” Metzger was featured on the flip cover of the July/ August issue of Women’s Health and will serve as a contributing fitness expert for the magazine. She also received a contract to create a fitness DVD, which is set to launch early next year. Now that she finds herself in the national spotlight, Metzger says she will continue to channel her passion to help women reach their fitness goals. “I believe every woman has an athlete inside her, and it’s my job to help her realize that.” Trainer crowned Women’s Health magazine’s Next Fitness Star Local resident Nikki Metzgerwas named Next Fitness Star by Women’s Health magazine.
