Neil Peart, John Mayer and Billy Joel have also influenced them. “We’re inspired to write songs based on what we’re feeling at the time. It’s a lot of fun to express ourselves through music,” said Alex. So far, the group has played at University of Phoenix, Comerica Theater and Tempe Beach Park. They’ve also traveled the U.S. with Camplified, a summer camp-based tour group. They’ve played in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut. “We love playing anywhere and seeing our fans respond to our songs. It’s all about the music,” Alex said. When they’re not making music, you can find the triplets watching sports or spending time with their dogs. Sela and Alex enjoy football while Ari is a basketball fan. In their downtime, Sela likes exploring with photography, Ari makes music and Alex likes to figure out how things work. The triplets also volunteer at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Every Valentine’s Day, they bring their Clifford the Big Red Dog costume and a nurse happily puts it on. The triplets hand out gifts as they walk the halls with the Big Red Dog. Eventually, the group would like to tour the U.S. and take their music worldwide. By Mallory Gleich When triplets Sela, Ari and Alex Poulos were 8 years old, their grandmother took them to a store in Santa Fe called The Candyman. Disappointed that the store sold instruments instead of what they expected – candy – the kids quickly recovered and picked out new equipment. One year later, they’d written their first song. With Sela on the drums, Ari on the guitar and Alex on the keyboards, the 16-year-old triplets created Just Seconds Apart . The group’s newest single Unbelievable is available on YouTube and Sirius XM. Sela, Alex and Ari were born on September 6, 1999 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. Arizona natives, they grew up in the Arcadia area and attended Ingleside Middle School. Now, the three attend Primavera online school, so that they can continue to make music and attend school from wherever they happen to be. They’re even featured on the Primavera television commercials. Their favorite subject? “What can we say? Lunch ! Then math,” Sela said. Growing up with a musical background, the JSA triplets took music classes at 18 months old. At 3 years old they enrolled in piano lessons. Ari wrote his first piano composition when he was 4. “The rest is history,” they said. Ari is the lead singer of the group with Sela and Alex singing harmonies. “Some say when they hear us, it gives them chills and they say it’s because of a triplet connection. Who knows?” Sela explained. Being that they are triplets, the term “just seconds apart” seemed appropriate. “Our name defines how we’re connected, both musically and how we live our lives. I don’t cling to my youth, as I know that chapter has closed, but at 45 years old, the last thing I feel is old. When conversing with folks about music, shows or nightlife in general, I’m often told, “I’m too old for that,” “it’s passed me by,” or “I just don’t get it anymore.” Hearing those resignations alarms me. How do you give up like that? I’d love to be young again. Who wouldn’t? But at this stage I’m excited to have made it this far and hope there’s a whole lot more ahead. I think of my kids and I want them to see that adults are vibrant beings, mad to live, not bumps on a log, loafing in the La-Z-Boy uniformed in slippers and bathrobes. To those that feel they’re too old to have fun by listening to new music, going to a show or dropping into a cool neighborhood nightspot, I promise you’ll feel the exact opposite of old when you venture into any of these actions. Now, maybe I could be more mature. Instead, I wind up playing tug of war with a 15-year-old kid for the last copy of a new LP at a record store, or walking into a club show after a long day of work – in my business suit looking like a Dad – and rocking out without a worry in the world. C’est la vie. The suggested music mix this month is a selection of tracks from bands that are playing in Phoenix in October. Go to your local record shop or get on the Internet and take a listen. Maybe it’ll get you out to a show. If so, come hang, I’ll be the tall guy in a suit who looks like a chaperone while your kids are rocking out to the music.
