Miller was born with a hole in his heart and at 6 months old, he had his first surgery. At just 2 1/2 years old he went under the knife again. That’s right, four open- heart surgeries before the age of 6. Now, 16 years old and a high school junior, Miller speaks passionately and candidly to both kids and adults about heart disease and why you should never take a healthy heart for granted. “My motto,” he said, “focus on what’s in front of you. Be thankful and grateful.” Although too young to remember the details, Miller’s long road paved with regular hospital visits, constant checkups, medication, life limitations and uncertainties has not been easy. Yet it came from the heart when he said, “I want to give more than I receive.” As a spokesperson for the American Heart Association here in Phoenix, Miller takes an active role in educating others about the risks of heart disease. “I want to start from the ground up and raise awareness with kids so they will go home and tell their parents,” he said. One of the best places to raise this kind of awareness is the Halle Heart Children’s Museum in Tempe. “This is not an art museum,” said Miller. “It’s interactive, engaging and makes learning fun.” The Halle Heart Children’s Museum, which is the only place of its kind in the country, has a dynamic environment where guests get to be hands-on while learning three important messages: to eat a healthy, balanced diet; make physical activity a part of your daily routine; and say no to tobacco. The interactive exhibits include a marketplace where guests can shop and play a game to see if they made the best healthy food choices. There is also a space called Kids on the Move Xbox Kinect where you can do everything from kick a virtual soccer ball, dance to your favorite tune or chop up a virtual salad. Halle Heart Programs and Operations Director Claudine Wessel explains it as, “how we meet kids where they are at.” She said, “Most kids love video games but sitting and only exercising their thumbs leads to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle so we want to encourage getting up and moving and finding active things you enjoy doing.” The museum was originally designed as a learning center for school groups but is now open to the public. “It was at first targeted towards second- and fifth-graders; however, we have added experiences and curriculum for our pre-K visitors as well as launched an adult lunch and learn series,” said Wessel. “We are looking to provide a fun and interesting place for the entire family to discover how to keep their heart and body healthy together.” The Halle Heart Children’s Museum is a non-profit educational facility made possible by the American Heart Association and The Phoenix Heart Ball. The Heart Ball, now in its 56th year, has raised more than $30 million to fight heart disease and stroke in our community and this year’s chairman, Kimberly Afkami said that change starts with awareness. Something Emery Miller preaches and practices every day, whether it’s on the baseball field wearing his heart protector or making sure that other kids protect their heart by making healthy choices and living a heart healthy lifestyle.
