Ten years ago, when she served as a Girl Scout leader, Meredith organized a one-time project where kids helped assemble Ziploc bags filled with juice boxes, packaged snacks and small toys. These goody bags then went to children in the foster care system. Meredith and her sister, a social worker for the Arizona Department of Child Safety, came up with the idea. “Kids who come from troubled families often get shuttled around a lot. My sister ends up driving kids around and picking them up. Very often, they are hungry, bored and tired,” Meredith said. Meredith explained that the goody bags helped cheer the kids up and gave them something to get excited about. The social workers appreciated the bags because they were something that occupied the kids. The goody bag project resurfaced in August 2015. Meredith is a member at Scottsdale United Church of Christ, which decided to give $100 to one member of the church so that the person may spend it helping and giving back to the community. She was drawn as the winner, and while deciding how she could help, remembered her goody bag project from years ago. She spent the $100 at Costco, purchasing as many juice boxes and snacks as possible. Then she turned to Nextdoor, a free app designed for neighborhood information, to spread the word. She encouraged people to donate, and the response was incredible. “It was unbelievable. So many people said we really want to contribute and we really want to help. I ended up meeting so many nice people,” Meredith said. “I knew people were going to be helpful but I didn’t know how helpful and incredibly generous people were.” It took less than two weeks to gather enough donations to put together over 900 bags. Meredith organized a group of 15 family members and friends and they spent a little under two hours assembling all the bags. “It was really fun because our youngest was a kindergartner and the oldest was my mother, who is 88. We had a huge assembly line going in three different parts of my house. It was totally a labor of love.” When it came time to transport the goody bags to the social workers’ offices, the boxes wouldn’t fit in Meredith’s suburban. They needed a state van to help transport all the goodies. After the success of this project, she decided to do it twice a year, once the social workers run low on bags. As for the Arcadia neighborhood, it’s an ongoing opportunity to teach kids about giving back to less fortunate children. “I really hope that people can teach their young children about giving and helping other people. I think a lot of times people don’t know how to do that or where to donate,” Meredith said. “There is a ton of need out there and this was just a little something that people can do to make a big difference. And the kids loved it.” Neighborhood mom organizes goody bag donation drive Each bag contains a juice box, a prepackaged snack like crackers or a granola bar, and a small toy, such as stuffed animals, books or crayons. In less than two weeks the Arcadia community donated enough supplies to fill over 900 goody bags.
