An eighth-grader at Ingleside Middle School, Grace noticed the growing number of homeless people in the area, and decided she wanted to do something to help. “I figured even if I can’t stop homelessness, I can at least help the homeless people we see on the streets by giving them bags of necessary items,” Grace said. Thus, the Red Bag Project was born. During the holiday season, Grace enlisted the help of fellow members of her swim club and together they raised $214. With this money, Grace and her friends assembled 24 bags to hand out to the homeless. These bags included items such as socks, tissues, floss and bottled water. The group also included a Subway sandwich and gift card to McDonald’s. “We are both very proud of Grace and her friends,” said Linda and Brent Schlenker, Grace’s parents. “On Christmas Day, when their friends were enjoying their gifts, Grace and [her friend] Sarah were in downtown Phoenix delivering gifts to the homeless. It was really something to see, how grateful they were for the gifts,” The red bags were such a success that Grace decided to continue her project, only this time she wanted to make it bigger. Grace and her friends created a website called redbagproject.com, which includes details and prices of the items included in the bags. They’ve also started a Go Fund Me page to accept donations. So far, they have reached $1,200 of their $2,300 goal. Once reached, Grace and her friends plan on handing out 100 red bags to the homeless. The Red Bag Project will also hold bake sales to raise money for the bags. The first bake sale is November 8 at a Phoenix Country Day School swim meet. People can come and buy baked goods or donate to the cause. “It made me really happy to see how much the gifts meant when we delivered them,” Grace said. “I was so sad when we didn’t have any more [to give out], but then I saw people sharing their gift bags with others, so that everyone could have something. That is when I knew I wanted to come back with more this year.” — For more details, or to donate to the cause, visit redbagproject.com or gofundme.com/redbagproject.
