A video of the proceedings and all the presentations can be viewed on the new district website: concrete.susd.org. Here are some highlights from the meeting: New Ice Den Academy – SUSD has partnered with the Ice Den to provide educational services to student athletes training here in Arizona. Austrian Delegation to visit SUSD – A delegation from Austria is coming to SUSD to see the world’s largest solar cooling plant, housed in Desert Mountain High School. Who knew? IT disaster recovery plan proves its mettle – SUSD had to test its IT disaster recover plan twice last month, once when part of the system went down the day of payroll, and again when cyber attacks by unnamed foreign countries threatened a data breach. Thankfully, improvements made to the system this year proved effective. The board asked IT to consider what next steps are needed to further secure the data and systems currently in place. AZ Merit scores – The state has released the “cut scores” (scores for levels of proficiency) for AZ Merit, the new statewide standards assessment. Scores specific to SUSD will not be available until October. At that time, SUSD will share with the public the level of proficiency on the standards of SUSD students. The community should understand that scores are expected to be lower than for AIMS as the standards themselves have been raised. Achievement gaps report – The administration provided comprehensive data on the number of students in advanced placement (college prep) classes at each SUSD high school, as well as ACT and SAT scores, broken down by gender and ethnicity. This presentation was part of the ongoing refinement of the district’s strategic plan, and its commitment to the premises that all students can learn and schools should set high standards for all students. The district intends to share this data with site leaders to focus on ways to increase access to honors and advanced classes to all students. This data will also help address nationwide trends, reflected in SUSD as well, indicating that students facing poverty, students of certain ethnic backgrounds, and girls in math and/or science and boys in language arts participate in lower numbers in the most rigorous academic classes. The next regular board meeting will be held at Coronado High School at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20. As always, this meeting is open to the community and public comment is welcome.
