Page 61 September 2015 By Josh Cutlip Arizona native and Arizona State University graduate, Amy Remfrey recently led the Arizona Special Olympics all-star softball team to a gold medal in Los Angeles at the Special Olympics World Games. Coach Remfrey attended Trevor Brown High School in Phoenix where she found her passion for coaching children with special needs. By taking a class called “People” she helped those children learn different sports and games. “There were [about] 30 kids in each class and we taught those students PE,” said Remfrey. Her ambition didn’t stop there however, “I started volunteering for a challenger little league. It was a little league for special needs children. Then I just stayed with it all these years. I still do that to this day, 28 years later.” Coach Remfrey’s passion is for softball, which she played in high school, but she has also coached other sports. “I used to help [with] track and field,” she said. “I did swimming and cross country skiing.” She has coached her daughter’s softball and volleyball teams. She helped coach softball at South Mountain as well. Now she finds herself coaching a Special Olympics softball team in Peoria where five of her players joined her at the World Games in Los Angeles. The team consisted of 15 players from around the state. “Five from Peoria, seven from Tucson, and three from Flagstaff,” Remfrey explained. She even had some help from the Arizona Diamondbacks when selecting her team. Coach Remfrey said that the Special Olympics World Games has been her greatest experience while coaching, but she felt particularly emotional at the opening ceremonies at the Memorial Coliseum, “It was just incredible. I think there were 65,000 fans in the stands,” Remfrey said. “When we walked out of that tunnel all you could see was people. I felt like I couldn’t breathe.” Twenty-eight years of coaching and working with special needs children and Coach Remfrey couldn’t be happier. “I just love it. It’s really cool to teach skills and watch the players execute [those skills].” She has made countless memories with her athletes and friends on the field, but she will not forget her experiences at the World Games. “There are just no words to describe the feeling. It was pretty amazing.” Arizona team wins gold at Special Olympics World Games The Arizona Special Olympics all-star softball team was made up of athletes from all over the state.
