Danielle was excited to work with the children herself, giving them lessons and sharing her love of music. Additionally, DVMF sponsored seven children who received financial support for the program. Once her foundation begins to grow, Danielle hopes it will spread beyond Arizona, and help students throughout the country to pursue a musical talent, as she was able to do. For now, DVMF is focused on gaining greater awareness and connecting with those students between ages 7 and 12 who are interested in joining the program. Danielle is optimistic about the present and what her foundation can do for potential musicians. “If the foundation is able to change just one child’s life, it’s worth all the hard work,” Danielle said. By Alessandra Dagirmanjian This past March, 16-year-old Arizona high school student, Danielle Victoria, launched the Danielle Victoria Music Foundation in an effort to combine her love of music and a desire to share that love with Arizona’s youth. The foundation gives children the financial support to work with an instructor of their choice for a year, either to learn an instrument or continue developing their talents. Since the foundation’s initial launch in March, Danielle has worked hard to spread the word about DVMF’s mission through both their website and social media. “I want to share a love of music with other people. The foundation, for me, is the opportunity to provide a chance to those who are financially unable to learn an instrument or take a music lesson,” said Danielle. Danielle developed the idea for her foundation after working towards a Creative Action and Service Project as part of her high school’s International Baccalaureate Program. Having played the piano since the age of 5, she chose to record some of her favorite classical songs by composers such as Beethoven and Chopin at A&M Studios in Hollywood, California for her project. She received great feedback from people who listened to her album, and decided to utilize her talent by putting her recording profits toward helping young people gain similar musical opportunities. With her parents’ inspiration, as well as the guidance of her piano teacher, Maryla Tiran, Danielle went beyond her CAS program requirements and pursued her dream of creating a foundation, while simultaneously finishing her junior year of high school. “It’s a challenge yes, but I’ve found great support from my parents and my teachers. It’s worth the time,” said Danielle. Reading a Facebook post from Eddie’s wife, Jessika, about her husband’s recent diagnosis of stage 3 throat cancer stopped me in my tracks and I’ve followed her subsequent posts since his June diagnosis. She’s documented everything from the initial shock, the family, the band, the surgeries, the recovery from those surgeries, the prognosis and the waiting game that comes with the territory. Gut-wrenching reads that expertly take you through the emotional rollercoaster of illness and the ripple effect it has on all the ones you love. The last post I read from her was the most difficult read yet. At the end, she thanked a family friend who’s not only been with them from the beginning of the process, but who also – as she put it – “is probably responsible for saving Eddie’s life as much as his amazing doctors.” She said that this person has fought for and armed the family with the “tools” to see the best surgeon for this form of cancer. “He took us under his wing, cared about our situation like it was his own,” she wrote. That person she was referring to was Eddie Vedder from the band Pearl Jam. So, if you needed any further reason to validate that Eddie Vedder is awesome, this should seal the deal. Pray for Eddie Spaghetti and pray for everyone because it’s all fun and games in this world until our health gets challenged. YES: HEART OF THE SUNRISE (1972) Having just lost co-founding member and one of the all-time great bassists in rock history in Chris Squire, Yes soldiers on and comes to Scottsdale with co-headliners Toto. This is a killer double bill and this tasty track from the band’s classic release Fragile should get your juices flowing. Yes will perform with Toto on Friday, September 4 at Talking Stick Resort, 9800 E. Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale. Tickets start at $30. WAVVES: WAY TOO MUCH (2015) When the band’s prolific leader Nathan Williams brings his pop punk outfit through Arizona, it’s always a great party. And coming to support their latest release V should be no different. Wavves performs on Wednesday, September 16 at the Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. Second Ave. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $24 and the show is open to concertgoers 16 years of age and older. THUNDERCAT: THEM CHANGES (2015) A multitalented bassist and producer of the highest order, Thundercat, playing the intimate stage at Valley Bar is without a doubt the funkiest no-brainer show in September. Thundercat will perform on Friday, September 18 at Valley Bar, 130 N. Central Ave. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $18 and the show is for guests 21 and older. TITUS ANDRONICUS: LONELY BOY (2015) This New Jersey rock band just released their fourth LP and will come to our cozy neighborhood venue to rock us out. Titus Andronicus performs on Wednesday, September 23 at The Rebel Lounge, 2303 E. Indian School Road in Phoenix. Tickets are $13 and the show is open to all ages. FOO FIGHTERS: FEAST AND THE FAMINE (2014) Possibly the biggest American band touring these days certainly doesn’t need an introduction, so get to the Pavilion on a Friday night and enjoy. Foo Fighters will perform on Friday, September 25 at Ak-Chin Pavilion, 2121 N. 83rd Ave. in Phoenix. Tickets start at $42.50. VAN HALEN: HEAR ABOUT IT LATER (1981) This one could be risky and filled with drama, but if you like rock ’n’ roll, Van Halen is an institution that deserves a proper nod.
