A good example for my platform [childhood obesity] is our support for the Halle Heart Children’s Museum in Tempe,” said Afkhami. “It is a dynamic, interactive, one-of-a-kind educational experience, where children and their families are empowered to lead heart healthy lives through fun exhibits and activity stations. Additionally, the American Heart Association impacts our community by way of research; advocacy initiatives…quality improvement tools used by hospitals to standardize patient care; and ‘CPR Anytime,’ an all-in-one kit that makes learning basic CPR, AED and choking relief skills fun, easy and possible in only 22 minutes.” For Afkhami, she’s glad to bring awareness for heart health to Phoenix families. “I’m honored and proud to be the Heart Ball chairman this year.” For more information on the AHA, what they do, or how you can get involved, visit, aha.org. Chairman Kimberly Afkhami, who has worked with the Heart Ball for over eight years, is leading the group of approximately 100 local women who believe in the AHA mission and work passionately to raise awareness for heart health in the community. “I want to make sure that we continue the fight against heart disease and stroke for our parents, our families and most importantly our children,” said Afkhami. “I chose childhood obesity as this year’s theme because I am passionate about children’s issues, and with childhood obesity being a leading health crisis facing American youth today, it was a natural [choice] for me.” In 2014 as Heart Ball chairman-elect, Afkhami was invited to attend the AHA’s annual Scientific Sessions conference in Chicago, where she learned the scope of the childhood obesity epidemic. “I had the opportunity to speak with several doctors and specialists about how obesity is affecting the young hearts,” said Afkhami. “I learned that obese children as young as 3 years of age show indicators for developing heart disease later in life. In Arizona, the childhood obesity rates are significantly higher than the national average; a staggering 19.8 percent of children here are considered obese. Experts believe that if obesity among children continues, the current generation will become the first in By Amanda Goossen Since 1959, the Phoenix Heart Ball and its generous donors have raised more than $30 million to fight heart disease and stroke in our community. The Heart Ball is one of the premier American Heart Association fundraising events, both locally and across the nation. It celebrates the lives saved and improved because of the countless efforts made by doctors, scientists and volunteers. The AHA is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Founded by six cardiologists in 1924, the organization now includes more than 22.5 million volunteers and supporters. According to the AHA, “Before the American Heart Association existed, people with heart disease were considered to be doomed to complete bed rest – or worse.” “We were living in a time of almost unbelievable ignorance about heart disease,” said Paul Dudley White, one of six cardiologists who founded the organization. Ninety-one years later, the AHA has funded 13 Nobel Prize winners and numerous scientific breakthroughs, trains more than 13 million people a year in CPR, and works to educate the public about how lifestyle changes can make all the difference. The annual Heart Ball is one among many ways the AHA raises funds each year. This year, as the Phoenix Heart Ball prepares for the November 21 event at the Arcadian leads with heart The Heart Ball 2015 Chairman Kimberly Afkhami with her husband and two sons at the 2014 gala.
