Page 46 September 2015 By Michelle Donati-Grayman One in four students from Phoenix Union High School District – the largest high school district in Maricopa County with more than 27,000 students – doesn’t graduate from high school in four years. Valley of the Sun United Way, community partners, and a group of dedicated volunteers are doing something to change those statistics. Destination Graduation – a brainchild of Valley of the Sun United Way – leverages early warning data, including attendance, behavior and course competency, and combines it with early intervention and support services to ensure students are on the path to high school graduation “We are thrilled to partner with Jobs for Arizona Graduates, school districts and schools, including Central High School, to prepare our young people to achieve success in the middle grades, graduate high school and get ready for college and a career,” said Julia Estrada, education and youth director for Valley of the Sun United Way. A key component of Destination Graduation is community and volunteer engagement. The program recruits community volunteers to serve as mentors and classroom advisors who help students in middle school and high school build knowledge and confidence to overcome obstacles that prevent them from succeeding in school. Five years ago, Destination Graduation began partnering with community volunteers and placing them in freshmen classrooms at Central High School. Volunteers visit classrooms an average of twice per month, delivering curriculum designed to increase resiliency skills in freshmen students by exploring their current lives, motivators, actions and goals. Travis Hardin became a classroom advisor during the program’s inaugural year after learning about the opportunity at Wells Fargo, where he works as an assistant vice president and communications consultant. Hardin said he enjoys the ability to teach but learns just as much, if not more, from his students. “It is a tremendous blessing to be able to sew into the lives of these young people,” Hardin said. “Everyone is not fortunate to come from the best of situations.” In addition to delivering classroom curriculum, this year classroom advisors will also hold report card conferences with students. For students at risk of failing a class, classroom advisors will work with them to create a contract to get back on track. “Destination Graduation works with students and data to uncover the students’ needs which range from academic, resiliency skill building to basic needs,” Estrada said. “The classroom advisory program at Central High School helps students navigate hurdles that may come up and connects them with caring volunteers who will help the student continue on the path toward graduation.” School districts currently participating in Destination Graduation include Phoenix Union High, Phoenix Elementary #1, Balsz Elementary and Osborn. The 2015-16 school year is underway, but it isn’t too late to get involved with this program. To learn more, visit vsuw.org. Cipriano’s journey to All Saints’ is one that includes a great deal of travel. Growing up in a mountainous region of Idaho and knowing he wanted to study education, the schools on his list were those that would allow him to enjoy his love of skiing. In 1998 Cipriano began his studies at the University of Utah, pursuing secondary education in mathematics and science while also interning in the special education department at an elementary school. After being paired with a fourth-grade boy, his superiors prepped him for an experience they felt would surely lead to failure. Blatantly told all things negative of the child’s life and how the student was failing, he was told not to expect a positive outcome. Cipriano made a conscious effort to get to know the child, connecting through the student’s interests. Over the course of 40 hours together, this kind-hearted teacher became dedicated to this child’s success in school and life. As a result, the student began practicing long division and increasing his reading fl uency. For a young teacher, it was a powerful experience. “My eyes got wider for children slipping through the cracks because nobody would help them.” Drastically changed after his internship, Cipriano switched his degree from secondary to elementary education and graduated from the University of Utah in 2003. Knowing he wanted to travel abroad, the next step was to begin a certification in English as a Second Language. Matched with an abroad teaching position through the American International School in Caracas, Venezuela, the Escuela Campo Alegre, would become Cipriano’s home from 2007 until 2015. He would teach second grade for the first three years, before becoming the math coordinator at the elementary level. During that time, Cipriano pursued a master’s degree in curriculum design for grades K-12 through University of Buffalo. “Being in an administrative role was always a future goal to have a larger effect on an institution within the school systems.” After receiving his master’s degree in 2010, Cipriano spent one year developing curriculum and assessment. With his role quickly shifting between curriculum development and students’ needs, he was promoted to assistant principal and continued in that position for four years. During the 2014-15 school year, Cipriano and his wife, Teresa, began searching for an administrative position in the U.S. When the position of assistant principal arose with All Saints’, the couple knew it was the right move for their family. With loved ones in Tucson, they knew they’d feel at home in Phoenix. “Caracas was a diffi cult city to live in,” said Cipriano. “The school became a bubble of safety and security for the children and we took pride on having the ability to do that for our families. I was looking for a school that took similar pride on being a hub of life and a community center. The community at All Saints’ has that sense of warmth and support.” Alongside his wife and two children, Cipriano moved to the Valley in June 2015. “I don’t think I could have found a more supportive fi t,” he said of his community at All Saints’. “Ever since I’ve been here, so many people have reached out to meet my needs and those of my family.” Andrew Cipriano All Saints’ selects new principal 1-877-617-4186 NextCare.com N .
