In my book, September marks many perfectly beautiful reasons to cut cake, hang streamers and blow up a few balloons. If you know me at all, you know I look for any reason to plan a party. But this month there is one extra special reason why I’m getting out the confetti! This month marks my second year as Managing Editor of this beloved community newspaper. September 2013 was the first month I took the reigns and began looking for neighborhood news, building a list of regular programs, finding photographers and writers, and establishing dialogue with this supportive and kind community. My fi rst issue was far from flawless, with error-filled headlines and even a grammatical mistake on the cover, but it was a childhood dream coming to fruition. I poured my soul into that issue of the paper. I’ll never forget sitting at my desk at 7:45 every morning during my fi rst production week, leaning over my computer, eyes heavy, head aching from very little sleep and feeling such fear that I wouldn’t be able to get this paper done, wondering if I’d let everyone down. But I was also fi lled with pride to be given the chance to try. I didn’t spend my 20s in a newsroom. I spent them changing diapers. I didn’t have a journalism degree (I have an English degree) or understand how to use any of the Adobe programs I was supposed to master. I learned everything as I went and while it was incredibly exciting, there were moments of intense doubt. But a handful of people believed in me. And boys and girls…knowing someone believes in you is a pretty powerful thing. We got that fi rst edition done, as a team, by the skin of our teeth. And together, our little Arcadia News gang has fi nished 23 editions since then, plus a dozen or so special editions…and they only continue to get better, easier to develop, and most importantly, they’re more fun. I’m incredibly proud of our team. Of our growth. Of the news we consistently get to bring to the neighborhood. Think about how much you love receiving your Arcadia News in the mailbox each month. (I know because so many of you have told me!) You should see my face when the printing company pulls up in front of the offi ce! I nearly knock the poor deliveryman down trying to grab the first copy. One of my favorite things in the world is when I run into someone at the supermarket or in line at LGO, and we start chatting and the obligatory question comes up: “What do you do?” I can’t tell you how much my heart swells when this lovely person says, “Oh my gosh, I love Arcadia News .” Right back at you, my friends. Arcadia News loves our readers. We sit in our monthly meeting, sipping our coffee and we contemplate what you’ll want to see and what you’ll want to read. We look forward to our monthly call outs for photographs and share your gorgeous shots all around the office as they arrive in my inbox. There is always one photo (but usually about 12) that send me running, with laptop in hand (I’m a klutz, I should really stop doing this), from my office, through the conference room, to our publisher Greg Bruns’ office, squealing, “I’ve got the cover… This is the cover !!!” Those are the cake-cutting, confetti- throwing, super-excitement-filled days that make up my reason to celebrate Have a great September, my friends!
