Boonlorn – who was 21 at the time – and her sister, survived the crash. Today her mother’s words serve as a constant reminder in her life. Although Boonlorn will never know the rest of the question her mother intended to ask that tragic day, she found her own meaning in the phrase and answered the question herself by carving out a life filled with authenticity and purpose. “It’s been kind of a compass,” Boonlorn said of her mother’s last words. “Often I’ll get pulled in a direction and go tumbling down that way and I’ll wonder, ‘Is this where I really wanted to go?’” Today, the 36-year-old knows where she wants to go and is successfully getting there. In 2010, she started her business Soul Carrier, which creates and sells “unique handbags for your journey.” Her company also supports the well-being of others by giving a portion of all bag sales to Crisis Nursery, a children’s shelter in downtown Phoenix, and through inspirational messages – handbags have names such as the Tenacity Messenger Bag or the Integrity Tote. “I named them after character traits that are universal,” Boonlorn said. Cathy Jahnke, owner of CJ Communications, has contracted with Boonlorn for a number of events, including The Mannequin is Our Muse event at Barneys New York in Scottsdale Fashion Square – an event which sparked Boonlorn’s idea to create a purse line. “[Jenn] is just a good person,” Jahnke said, “and despite going through some heartbreaking losses in her life, she is such a strong individual and has marched forward with such grace and gone on to do great things.” Boonlorn grew up in the area of Tatum Boulevard and Shea Road with an Italian American mother and Thai immigrant father. Her mother homeschooled her and her sister and helped pass legislation in Arizona that supported homeschooling. Her father was an architect who held a master’s degree and was talented and hardworking, but could never rise to the level he dreamed of because of his difficulty speaking the English language. Knowing the struggles he had faced in architecture, he tried to steer his daughter away from a career in fashion and graphic design. “He said, ‘No, you’ll become a lawyer,’” Boonlorn said. So after her parents’ death, Boonlorn thought she would go to law school to make her parents proud. “But it wasn’t a fit, because it wasn’t my true dream,” Boonlorn said. Knowing she had a purpose in life because she survived that tragic day, she made a decision. “I’m not going to let my life fall apart. Because if I do, then I may as well have been taken in that car accident too,” Boonlorn said. So she enrolled in the fashion program at Mesa Community College, then went on to The School of Fashion at Parsons in New York and held high-level internships at Oscar de la Renta and Women’s Wear Daily. However, she eventually grew homesick and returned to the Valley to be near family Through her business and optimistic outlook on life, Boonlorn hopes to continue inspiring others to live the life they were meant to live – just as she has. Former Soul Carrier intern Gabriella Lion said she has been inspired by Boonlorn’s philosophy. “For her, it’s really about connecting to her clients,” Lion said. “People are able to love themselves and that is a really valuable thing to gain from her.” Although Boonlorn has found her passion and meaning through Soul Carrier, she knows that there will always be tough days and it’s how we manage them that counts. “There are times where it’s hard and I think, ‘What am I doing?’” Boonlorn said. “But even with my parents’ car accident and when things go awry, [those events] are all shaping me.” She added, “What’s my truth and how am I going to show up in the midst of chaos? Part of that outlook on life is what got me through … and also inspired my bags and the conversations they can spark about living authentically.” Inspiring others to live their life Jennifer Paige Boonlorn BEHIND THE BUSINESS
