Page 52 August 2015 2015 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE By Nicholas Smith One of the best parts of being a high school football coach is watching players grow from inexperienced freshmen into skilled seniors. One of the toughest parts of being a high school football coach is watching those kids graduate and knowing you have to start over. This is where the Arcadia Titans stand going into the 2015 football season. The team last year went 7-3 and fell just short of the state playoffs. But this year will be a different Titans team as the squad graduated 28 seniors last May. “We’re going to be young,” said head coach, Lenny Abt. “We actually have just two returning starters on offense. Most of the guys we lost overall were starters, so a big part of the season will be getting familiar with the system.” Fortunately, this year’s team has a work ethic that was set by the upperclassmen who led the team last year. “They watched the seniors and saw the success that can happen when you buy into the system,” said Abt. “There’s a bit of a learning curve, but the kids know how to be successful from watching the older kids last year.” Despite the younger team, Coach Abt won’t lower his expectations for the upcoming season. He notes there are some returning varsity players who should be able to combine seamlessly with junior varsity players from last year. Arcadia Football Preview: Young team in 2015 “The JV kids had a successful season as well,” noted Abt. “We run the same system throughout every level of the program, so they should be able to come in and contribute. We set the bar high and we’re expecting the kids to hustle and work hard.” Arcadia players who put in that work in previous seasons have seen it pay off. The team has continued to improve and several players have gone on to play at a college level, something Coach Abt says is one of his favorite parts of coaching. “It’s always great to see their hard work be rewarded,” said Abt. “Even if they don’t play in college, seeing the growth is why I coach. You watch kids at 14 years old and then you get to see where they are at 18. That growth is why I coach. I still stay in touch with kids who I coached 20 years ago.
