The theme of the contest was “The Magna Carta: What’s so great about the ‘Great Charter’?” Teams were judged on how accurately they portrayed the Magna Carta and its impact on the world, as well as their execution of various technical skills such as film formatting and video production. The award was granted to the team on April 14 in Washington, D.C. where the students had an opportunity to meet the Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. As a result of their winnings, the team received a special invite from the ABA to attend the final day of the Magna Carta 800th anniversary event at Runnymede in London, England. One member of the team, 15-year-old sophomore, Jacob Staudenmaier, and his parents Heidi and Louis, were able to attend. The Staudenmaier family made it to the event on June 15, which was an important day because the ABA held a special conference as part of the Magna Carta celebrations to rededicate the ABA monument located at Runnymede. Royalty attended this event along with thousands of people who traveled from all around the world, including the ABA President William Hubbard and hundreds of other ABA members. The Magna Carta is believed to be one of the most significant documents in history because it guaranteed the people certain rights and was an early example of the development of human rights, democracy and liberty. It all started back in June 1215 when the citizens became fed up and threatened civil war which forced King John to sign the declaration of rights now known as the Magna Carta. Today, there are only four originals left of the Magna Carta, the best preserved is kept at the Salisbury Cathedral north of London, which the Staudenmaiers said they were able to see in person the day before the celebration. “The most memorable part was getting the chance to see the Queen of England and Prince William in person,” Jacob said. “It was also memorable being at Runnymede and seeing the actual meadow where the Magna Carta had been sealed by King John 800 years ago.” “You could close your eyes and imagine what it looked like 800 years ago with the King, the barons and other people all gathered in such a historic location,” he said. All in all, Jacob Staudenmaier and his family said it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that they will never forget. “It really made me appreciate what a huge impact the Magna Carta has had on the principles of democracy around the world, including the United States,” Jacob said.
