We can’t wait for our first day of school! Page 4 August 2015 Boredom forces creativity By Amanda Goossen This summer I decided to stop over scheduling activities for my kids, cramming too much into my days, and worrying about how I’d balance it all. I’m not sure where time goes these days, but apparently having school- age children makes days fly by and gray hairs grow. Life, it seems, is quickly passing by and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. So this summer I went with a totally old- fashioned plan. I wanted my kids to just be . I wanted them to be bored. I wanted each day of summer to be open to unlimited possibility. And oh my goodness, it was glorious. This summer was brought to you by the crazy looks I get from my parents when I rush off to yet another place my kids and I have to be. This summer was brought to you by the women I know, who raised their children many decades ago and look at me with concern, saying, “Gosh, how do you do it?” This summer was brought to you by: I’m gonna give my kids all the education, after school activities, and brainwork I can for 9 1/2 months a year but gosh darn it, for nine fabulously fun weeks of summer I’m gonna leave them the heck alone. I’m gonna let them be kids! And that doesn’t mean they stared at an iPad for 72 days. Errr… Although I have to admit we did mingle with technology a little this summer. But in-between a couple fun vacations, my 9- and 7-year-old kids played games, discovered how to make grilled cheese and cinnamon muffins all by themselves, and learned to do the dishes. They obtained necessary life knowledge and they simply played. All. Day. Long. On the days when I had to be glued to my computer, typing words or handing out writing assignments, and they said, “Mom, I’m bored,” I told them to figure it out. And they did! Not immediately. Not without a bit of hesitation. But they did. They created imaginative games and had long conversations with each other (that were quite hilarious I might add); they ran around the house fighting monsters and built massive forts. They invented things, used their imaginations and used problem solving skills to battle boredom. It was beautiful. I think teaching our kids to cope with free time – hours or moments – is just as important as tutoring or piano lessons. Over scheduling I realized is sometimes necessary, but if given the chance, we should open up that same schedule and let kids be free. I hope your summer was as heartwarming and free-spirited as ours. Welcome back to school, my friends! Thank you for reading Arcadia News !
