JOIN US ON AN ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME Black Giraffe Dancing Adventures presents two unique Christmas/New Year’s adventures in Tanzania. DISCOVER AFRICA’S GARDEN OF EDEN The Ngorongoro Crater is 20 kilometers across, 600 meters deep and 300 square kilometers in area and part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On the rim looking across the views, rainy or sunny (I’ve seen it both ways) are spectacular. On the crater floor you’ll see lots of wildlife, which includes the possibility of seeing the Black Rhinos. I’ve been fortunate to have seen the Black Rhinos each time I’ve been on the crater floor. One animal you won’t see on the crater floor is a Giraffe. Not only does the crater give beautiful scenery and wildlife it also gives you the people. At the crater you have the opportunity to visit a Massai village and if interested you can visit Oldupai Gorge and Museum where remains of the oldest humans were found. Everything is here for you to discover the magic of Africa’s Garden of Eden. For those interested you’ll also have the opportunity to be part of the first group in the two million plus years the crater has been in existence to dance a choreographed dance at Africa’s Garden of Eden. On January 1, 2016 at approximately 8:30 a.m. those interested will dance the Mt Kili Cha Cha at the same time those on Africa’s Rooftop are attempting a Guinness world record by dancing the Mt Kili Cha Cha. Page 25 August 2015 By Alessandra Dagirmanjian For soon-to-be kindergartner Ellianna Ellet, the first day at Hopi Elementary School this fall will mean dusting off a treasured family tradition, which dates all the way back to her great-grandmother Leona Schenck. In recognition of each generation of women before her, Ellianna will wear the same dress her Great-Grandma Leona did to her first day of school back in 1935. This historic dress, with its blue-, red- and white-checkered design, white-laced collar, and frilled sleeves has survived unchanged through a family history beginning with Ellianna’s great-great-grandmother, who bought it for her daughter Leona Schenck over 80 years ago. Leona kept the dress and when it was time for her daughters, Sandra and Mary Schenck, to attend kindergarten, she thought it might be special for them to wear it just as she had on her first day. Eventually, this small but sentimental idea transformed into a time-honored tradition, as each female member after Leona continued to don the dress for their first day of kindergarten. “This family tradition is a simple expression of our love and shared experience as a family,” said Leona. Mary later passed the dress on to her daughter Sandra, and Mary’s brother Barry passed it on to his daughter, Rayme Ellet, who is Ellianna’s mother. As the dress continues to go through each generation, its tradition becomes richer and more special for the newest family member who inherits it. Throughout the years, the dress has remained safely framed until the next girl gets to wear it. Rayme is excited to take the dress out again and pass it on to her daughter Ellianna this fall, in the hopes of recognizing a significant part of her family’s culture. Rayme explained to Ellianna how she, her aunt, and her grandmother, wore the dress to help her gain a sense of her family’s past. “Family is important and it’s important for kids to know where they come from. It gives us a chance to connect with the generations,” said Rayme. Great-Grandma Leona visited her family this summer to see Ellianna try on the dress in anticipation of her first day of school, and share in the excitement and continuation of the tradition. Ellianna was thrilled to have her great-grandma there, and said she can’t wait to wear her dress to school. “I like wearing Great-Grandma Lee’s dress. It was hers and I like her. It makes me feel special.” A family’s longtime tradition for the first day of school Ellianna modeling the dress at school with Great-Grandma Leona and her mother Rayme.
