San Miguel $695,000 Sold Page 43 July 2015 By Jean Hodgson Which of your neighbors do you know – beyond recognizing them and their cars as they come and go – and how did you get acquainted? Some Arcadians are introduced through a planned activity like Neighborhood Watch. Oftentimes, repeated casual visits while walking a dog, pushing a stroller, or taking a welcome break to chat while doing yardwork, develop into real friendships. It wasn’t until this spring that we met Alan Lloyd and had the opportunity to learn his unique story. We had been neighbors since 1982! The introduction came through my brother-in-law Mark, who lives in Maryland – an unlikely connection, to be sure. Mark’s passion is classic cars. He had spotted Alan’s collection on an earlier visit, introduced himself to share details about their common interest, stayed in touch over the miles, and was convinced we would enjoy meeting him. Mark was certainly right. The rest is history. Alan was born in Thailand. He spent his early years in a government welfare orphanage in Bangkok, even though he was not technically an orphan. His mother worked as a housemaid and was unable to care for him. The pathway for education included his middle grade years at a Catholic boarding school and then back to Bangkok for training at St. John Bosco Technical School. His days beginning in grade eight were spent in workshops, learning various trades to hopefully prepare him to be employed and self-supporting. Academic studies were relegated to evening hours, but it was Alan’s commitment to gain skills in the English language that led him to a contact that proved to be a key to his future. For several years he practiced writing English by corresponding with a Catholic priest. Father Anthony recognized that his young Thai pen pal was capable and motivated to do much more than work in a trade, so he offered to bring him to America to attend college. Alan said, “I did not think Father Anthony was serious, even though a college education had always been my dream.” He explained that obtaining a passport and then getting a copy of an official high school transcript was a huge challenge. Father Anthony was living in Arcadia and ministering to a Lithuanian congregation, so Alan’s first introduction to America was Arcadia in 1970. When he arrived in Phoenix, Alan worked at the Basha’s market on Indian School Road, riding his bicycle or the bus all the way to Phoenix College to earn his associate’s degree. Alan shared the concerns he had felt about being qualified to study here due to his background, but his degree in Electrical Engineering from ASU and his eventual retirement from a long career at Honeywell are evidence of what can happen when academic talent, an outstanding work ethic and an opportunity to follow a dream come together. His decision to permanently be an Arcadian – and our neighbor – is another example of the love so many develop for our community. I’m so glad my brother-in-law introduced me to my neighbor! Jean Hodgson just recently met her neighbor, Alan Lloyd whom she had lived near since 1982 and learned his fascinating story. RETIREMENT NOW WHAT? Longtime neighbor becomes newly found friend
