Walter, who is deaf, might jump on you, but he’s only being playful. Once they’ve figured out that you’re a guest, they’ll meander on their way. Jamie Cowgill and Todd Wills, the “parents” of Walter and Maggie – as well as the owners of Carbon Footprint – wanted to give their business a comfortable and homey feeling, so the pups come with them whenever they’re at work. From the age of 14, Jamie knew she wanted to be in the design industry. Originally, she was interested in graphic design, and built her portfolio from drawings she drew from her father’s Field & Stream magazines. Jamie graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. She then moved to Phoenix, working her way from a sign fabricating company to owning her own business, JRC Design. JRC Design focuses on environmental design, wayfinding and interpretive graphics. Todd was born in Ohio, but has lived in Arizona since he was 3. He spent a few years in Southern California and moved back to Arizona when he was 30. Todd worked construction while he was in school and planned to pursue landscape architecture so he could design golf courses. Instead, Todd started Harvest Design Group about five years ago. Harvest Design Group is a design-build firm. Todd designs and the group builds all of their pieces. They do both commercial and residential work. Todd and Jamie met through a mutual colleague who asked Todd to help with landscape design at Jamie and her husband’s house in Arcadia. “We were standing in the driveway,” said Todd, “and Jamie turned to me and said, ‘Well, now I’m going to have to get all new furniture to go with [the renovations].’ And I said, ‘Why don’t we make it?’” A year later, Carbon Footprint was born. “We still haven’t made my furniture,” Jamie laughed. With a simple conversation, Jamie and Todd started a partnership and moved into the building that houses Carbon Footprint, JRC Design and Harvest Design Group. They’ve been there for seven months. Todd and Jamie designed everything on Carbon Footprint: Furniture with a purpose the inside and outside of Carbon Footprint. The layout, floor plan, landscaping and light fixtures, among other things, were built by them. A large portion of the furniture made at Carbon Footprint is created from salvaged material. They’ve also used trees found at junkyards for the wood elements. Other pieces are made from items such as glass, resin and acrylics. Todd and Jamie are always searching for the next trend – the next great design that makes their company different from any other. The goal behind Carbon Footprint is simple: designs that leave a mark. “Massimo Vignelli said, ‘If you can’t find it, design it,’” said Jamie. “So we did.” For more information about Carbon Footprint, visit carbon-footprint.us or call 602-812-4337.
