Page 8 June 2015 By Francesca Thomas On Tuesday, May 12, 2015 the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board held its regular meeting. A complete video of the proceedings can be found on the website, susd.org. The board heard recommendations from the budget committee and on the subject of the middle school planning guide. Also, action was taken to renew for one year the current assessment tool used by the district to measure student growth. Of particular interest was a presentation made on how the new dollars available through the renewal of the override will be spent. The board made a point to publicly thank the community for voting yes on the Maintenance and Operations Override. According to SUSD CFO, Daniel O’Brien, the $10.8 million in new funds will be spent as follows:  Free full-day kindergarten will be maintained: currently paid for with existing K- override  Return of full specials (music, art, PE) to the elementary schools, and full-day Wednesdays: $1.8 million  Return of band to elementary schools: $259,000  Reduction of class size across all SUSD Board thanks community grades: $4.1 million  Two percent salary increase for staff: $2.19 million  Horizontal movement (salary increase) for qualifying teachers: $586,000  Funding of the district self-insure trust for staff: $1.5 million  Restoration of stipends for department chairs: $117,000  Restoration of seven assistant principals: $552,000  Restoration of one elementary principal: $93,000 These funds amount to slightly more ($11.2 million) than the new monies available through the renewal of the override, and the district will compensate for that in the final budget proposal. In total, 89 percent of all funds will be spent directly in the classroom. The next regular board meeting will take place on June 9 at 5 p.m. at Coronado High School. On June 23, at 5 p.m. at Coronado, the board will vote on the fi nal budget for 2015-16. — Francesca Thomas is an Arcadia mom who has volunteered in SUSD schools for 15 years. SCHOOL BOARD
