Abigail Diazcadena takes a journey to Tempe Town Lake to practice her sport. “It’s really the only place around to practice rowing,” said Diazcadena. “We go in a circle around the lake, which is about 5,000 meters.” Diazcadena is a senior at Arcadia, who has received a scholarship to row at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She began rowing in the eighth grade, after deciding it was time to find a new sport. “I had played soccer for 10 years before that,” said Diazcadena. “But it wasn’t really keeping me in shape. My mom had a friend who was rowing and that’s how I got into it.” The sport isn’t exactly well known among the general population and Diazcadena notes that people sometimes think the biggest and strongest person in rowing automatically wins. But she says this isn’t true and it’s one of the biggest reasons she loves the sport. “It’s not about muscle and who is the strongest,” noted Diazcadena. “You can be the weakest rower and have incredible technique and end up beating people who have been weightlifting for years. There’s nothing better than going into a race as the underdog and then pushing yourself hard and winning.” Winning a scholarship has been a goal for Diazcadena since she took up the sport. Since junior high she was interested in heading out of state for college and believed rowing would give her an opportunity to do just that. “Rowing is really big in the Northeast,” she said. “That was a big reason my mom pushed me into rowing. She told me there would be a lot of different recruiting options. I feel like going out of state will give me the opportunity to grow up, without the temptation to come home on weekends.” Diazcadena ended up achieving her dream of rowing for a Division I school in the Northeast. She chose UMass Amherst after a visit to the school, where she felt a welcoming and friendly atmosphere from rowers and coaches. “What’s interesting is that rowing is the most team-oriented sport I’ve ever been in,” she said. “You’re basically a family, where you have an enormous support system with healthy competition. And the team as a family was something I felt at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.” Arcadia rower credits team and technique for success Abigail Diazcadena spends afternoons at Tempe Town Lake, the only place possible to practice rowing.
