Page 39 June 2015 By Katie Snyder Northern Arizona is most known for its beautiful scenery, great weather and outdoor adventures. But what most people don’t know is that nestled between the red rocks and the pine trees is Camp Soaring Eagle, home to thousands of chronically ill children and their families year-round. Camp Soaring Eagle is geared towards providing on-site medical care so that sick children can experience the fun of camp under the watchful eye of a cadre of volun- teer nurses and physicians. For each session, medical professionals offer the highest level of care for campers, for free. Through their partnerships, Camp Soaring Eagle staff and volunteers ensure campers have a safe experience during their stay. The organization offers six different types of camping programs: illness-specific camp- ing weekends, sibling camper weekends, illness-specific family retreats, summer camp programs, veteran’s children camper weekends and camp outreach. Depending on the session, campers and their families typically stay anywhere from two to five days. “I can’t put into words what it means to us that you all do so much to make sure these children have a great time,” said Kris- ti Pahnke, a camper mom. “Thank you for making my child feel like a regular kid and for making her little sister feel extra special, too. It’s something they will remember for the rest of their lives.” Prior to this year, the camp ran its programs out of Jackpot Ranch in Camp Verde and the Briar Patch Inn in Sedona. Having its own, permanent camp location allows the organization to offer more services and provide a local camp experience year-round. Camp Soaring Eagle hopes to serve 1,700 campers and family members this year. Depending on the retreat chosen, camp participants will enjoy a wide range of activities such as horseback riding, fishing, crafts, music, archery and boating. “At camp I get to escape my illness and just be myself. The activities are fun, the counselors are nice and they always make sure I take my medicine,” said Mia McPoland, a former camper. Camp Soaring Eagle gives children a chance to interact with peers facing the same battles so they don’t feel alone or different anymore. Illness-specific programs are geared towards campers and families facing a variety of illnesses, such as blood disorders, cancer, bowel diseases, respiratory diseases and Type 1 diabetes. “Some kids do have obvious signs of their illnesses; they have physical scars. But the emotional scars are hidden, and the camp attempts to address that,” said Juan Morales, executive director of camp operations. “This is a place where kids can get away from the everyday pressures of their illness and medical treatments and just be kids; we look forward to providing more and more kids normalcy in their lives.” — For more information, visit campsoaringeagle.org.
