To Savannah, Georgia to be exact. Owner and Publisher Greg Bruns and I decided a change of scenery was in order. Too much time sitting in front of the computer, proofing the paper, and remembering where to put a comma, had us feeling a bit burnt. Plus, the Association of Free Community Papers was holding its yearly convention and their 2015 Best of the Best AFCP Awards. We were ready to learn, network and see the sights. We were also hopeful we’d win an award or two. While in Savannah we experienced everything the town had to offer. We witnessed a citywide ghost tour company that gave the tourists a ride around in a hearse. We walked steps along the river that have remained unchanged for over a century. The signs warn those who descend to be careful, they are steep and uneven. They aren’t kidding. The angle and height is almost funny. The roads and pathways are cobblestone in most places. The riverfront is gorgeous with large ferries taking tourists up and down the historical waterway. Cargo ships haul goods into the port. Pirates were apparently once a problem. Every gift shop in town has pirates displayed on T-shirts and coffee mugs. Greg and his wife, Jennifer, enjoyed dinner at Savannah’s famous Pirate House one evening. One of the oldest structures in the city, the Pirate House was built in 1734 as an inn for seafarers but quickly became a meeting point for the bloodthirsty pirates who stopped in the city for a night’s rest, or to simply wreck havoc on the locals. Underground tunnels are spread out throughout the city. Some belonged to the Underground Railroad as passageways and hideouts, others are cloaked in mystery and myth. Some were sealed off with rumors of yellow fever victims once hidden away and buried from the public. The historical significance of pirates, ghosts and mysterious passageways were absolutely everywhere, making me wonder where all the famous Georgia peaches were hiding. I had to search far and wide for one souvenir bearing a giant round peach. We made sure to stop at the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream, which has been dishing out their homemade ice cream since 1919. After Greg, Jennifer and I waited in line for over an hour in the sun, we decided two scoops were in order and my goodness, were they good. Our greatest day of the trip, however, didn’t arrive while we were touring the streets, but rather as we sat side by side in a large banquet room at the Marriott. The Best of the Best awards were announced at 8 a.m. and Greg and I were bright eyed and filled with coffee, ready to hear the announcements. The Arcadia News name was announced again and again. We were honored with 12 AFCP awards (see the full list on page 25). Our writers won, our designers won, even our favorite photo from last year won honorable mention. We couldn’t have been more proud! On the flight home two days later, we felt inspired, refreshed and excited to bring the awards back to the community. Without the neighborhood, without the people, without the connections our community is blessed to have, the Arcadia News could not exist. The Arcadia News is truly your neighborhood paper. We treasure each of you that make it possible. Arcadia News takes on Savannah Braving the steep and risky historic steps, Arcadia News ventured into Savannah in the pursuit of Leopold’s “world-famous ice cream”. Born in 1733, Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia.
