Both Covarrubias and Pierson were awarded the Abercrombie & Fitch Anti- Bullying Scholarship. The girls, who are both 18, each received a $10,000 scholarship. “Together we have created a now annual Arcadia tradition, Kindness Week,” said Pierson. “This past summer I traveled to Japan through Phoenix Sister Cities. While I was there, I spoke on the importance of kindness to my Japanese high school and passed out buttons with messages of kindness to the entire class.” Kindness Week had a purpose of empowering young minds to take a stand against the hate in the world and sign a pledge to stop negative slurs. The girls also asked their entire high school to write kindness grams, otherwise known as “nice notes.” The notes were then given out randomly to other students. The two young women worked alongside school administrators to air various public service announcements as well as film a documentary called Bully and an MTV episode of If You Really Knew Me. Along with their growing list of accomplishments, their movement also reaches the local middle schools. “We have worked at middle school leadership camps and have taught a class at Arcadia’s feeder school, [Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center], about the importance of kindness,” Pierson said. Both teens are passionate about preventing bullying. “After coming back from Unitown [a diversity camp] in 2012 three other students and I created the Arcadia Student Advisory Board,” Covarrubias said when speaking about what first sparked her interest in the anti-bully campaigns. The girls believe that bullying is exceedingly prominent in today’s age and therefore want to see the campaigns continue. “When you think of bullying, the first image that comes to mind may be a kid being harassed for lunch money, or someone getting called names on the playground, but bullying has definitely evolved,” Pierson explained. Pierson went on to say that she feels as though bullying doesn’t stop at school because it can continue on social media and act in a “behind-the-scenes kind of way.” After graduation, Covarrubias plans to attend Northern Arizona University to study International Affairs. Pierson will venture off to Washington D.C. and study at the American University and is torn between the choice of broadcast journalism or film. Arcadia High School seniors were nationally recognized for their anti-bullying campaign. Valley teens earn $10K with their fight against bullying
