Like so many of our excellent teachers, Mrs. Bosworth takes this responsibility to heart. “My goal has always been to be the kind of teacher I’d want my daughter to have,” she said. She recalls the power of a comment from Mrs. Gookin, her freshman English teacher at Arcadia High School. Gookin said, “Allison, you’re a really good writer.” “That was all it took for me to start trying harder and I began to see myself as a good student,” Bosworth shared. Nominating parent, Chamise Broucek, whose children, Will (eighth-grade), Ellie (fourth-grade) and Mollie (second-grade), have all had the pleasure of Mrs. Bosworth’s tutelage, said, “Her attention to the kids – and really playing to their strengths – is amazing!” She adds that Mrs. Bosworth even checks in on former students’ progress throughout their time at Hopi. Bosworth’s family is from Chicago, but came here when she was an infant. She and her sister are both products of Hopi, Ingleside Middle School and Arcadia High School. She is raising her own family here in the Arcadia neighborhood, where her sister and parents still live. “My dad loves taking credit for initiating my career as a teacher,” Bosworth shared as she recalled what inspired her choice. She was a senior in high school, attending church one Sunday, when her dad volunteered her to fill in for a preschool teacher who was ill. “My dad really didn’t ask me if I wanted to do it, he just told me it was happening,” she remembered. “An hour later, I was hooked…So yes, ‘Thank you, Dad.’” According to Broucek, one of the funny stories Bosworth shares with parents on Back to School Night is one of her dad peeking through the window of her classroom when she was first teaching, 15 years ago. With supportive parents like that, it’s no wonder Mrs. Bosworth is so invested in the welfare of all her students. TEACHERS WE LOVE Mrs. Bosworth with the Broucek girls. Page 15 June 2015 By Katlyn Ewens Ten years ago, Arcadia News owner and publisher, Greg Bruns, created an annual scholarship to encourage Arcadia High School seniors to pursue their passion for writing. This year, that scholarship was awarded to Rae Aaron. “We started [the Arcadia News Scholarship] because I thought it was important for the paper to have a stronger connection with the students in our area, especially those that apply themselves to journalism or media in some segment at Arcadia High,” Bruns said. “It’s really hard to find younger people that are going into journalism or writing. We wanted to encourage young journalists and writers to move on with their craft.” Arcadia High School selects the candidates and then sends the names of eligible students to Arcadia News for the final decision. Aaron’s love for writing started in the seventh-grade, when she started writing articles for local magazines, newspapers and her school’s website. “My favorite part of journalism is conducting interviews, because I have been lucky to meet so many interesting people and can learn something really cool while getting great content for an article,” Aaron said. “I also love sitting down and crafting the article, because writing is such an art, and it requires so much focus and dedication.” Aaron wrote and edited for Arcadia High School’s newspaper and website, The Arcadian and ahsnews.com. She has also had articles published in Arcadia News . She is dedicated and punctual, which she showed through her work with Arcadia News . Rae has big plans for the future, both near and far. She will attend Middlebury College in Vermont, where she hopes to study international politics and economics. They do not have a major in journalism there, but she plans to get involved with the school newspaper. She said writing will always be the emphasis of her studies and that’s part of why she chose one of the oldest liberal arts schools in the country. Next stop will hopefully be New York. “My dream job would either be a New York Times journalist based in New York or Moscow or to own my own bipartisan political magazine,” Aaron said. “I also love New York City and think it would be cool to work on Wall Street since I’m interested in business, especially because there aren’t enough women in that industry.” Aaron graduated from Arcadia High School on May 21 and will be Vermont- bound in the fall. Arcadia News wishes her the best of luck with her future endeavors! AHS senior earns Arcadia News Scholarship Rae Aaron was a writer and editor with the Arcadia High School newspaper.
