About six in 10 cases are found in men over 65. Race – Prostate cancer occurs more often in African-American and Caribbean men of African ancestry than in men of other races. Geography – The disease is most common in North America, Australia and on Caribbean islands. A family history of prostate cancer – Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles your risk. Gene changes – Scientists have found several inherited gene mutations that seem to raise the risk of prostate cancer, but they probably account for only a small percentage of cases overall. Mutations of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes may increase prostate cancer risk in some men. Men with Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by inherited gene changes, have an increased risk for several cancers, including prostate cancer. Diet – Men who eat a lot of red meat or high-fat dairy products appear to have a slightly higher chance of getting prostate cancer. Obesity – Some studies have found that obese men have a lower risk of getting a less dangerous form of the disease, but a higher risk of getting a more aggressive form. Remember, when cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. See your physician to discuss screening tests that could include a prostate-specifi c antigen (PSA), blood test and a digital rectal exam. PSA, a substance made mostly by the prostate, may be found in an increased amount in the blood of men with prostate cancer. However, PSA levels also may be high in men with an infection or inflammation of the prostate or those with an enlarged but noncancerous prostate. — Tiffany Pankow, M.D., is a primary care physician at HonorHealth Arcadia.
