Page 59 Budget Cuts put Hopi’s Field Day at risk By Rachael Bouley Huge budget cuts in the Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District have affected Hopi Elementary School and its Track and Field Day tradition. The cuts have forced teachers in the physical education, music and art departments to split their time between multiple schools. This leaves little time and resources for the teachers to take on extra projects and activities, such as art walks and musical performances. This year, Hopi’s tradition of track and Field Day fell victim to the budget cuts. For the physical education teachers who normally plan and run the event, their schedules at different schools made it extremely dif fi cult to coordinate the Field Day. As of March, it looked as though Field Day was not going to happen in the spring. That’s when the women behind Hopi Fit Club stepped in to lend a hand. A few years ago, Megan Pearson, a second-grade teacher at Hopi, organized the Hopi Fit Club with two Hopi moms, Blake VanEs and Shandi Rooney. Before school, students in the program spend a half-hour doing physical exercise in which they participate in both individual and group activities. In March, after learning that the physical education teachers could not put together the Field Day, the PTA asked the Fit Club if they were willing to coordinate the event. “The PTA approached the Fit Club to see if we would want to sponsor the Field Day,” Pearson said. “So it’s been a wild ride. It’s our fi rst time putting together a track and Field Day.” Teachers and parents came together to help the Fit Club pull off a fun- fi lled, traditional Track and Field Day, held on April 28 and 30. Despite the busy month of testing, teachers were willing to set aside time to help plan the event for the students. “It came together because the teachers care about the kids and want them to have this opportunity,” Pearson said. “We started from scratch and rounded up parent volunteers, especially those in the sports industry, such as coaches, who helped develop the program.” Kindergarten teacher, Livia Rice, who helps at Fit Club, held a white T-shirt drive and then led a tie-dye day to make colorful shirts for the event. All 840 students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including a sack race, bean bag toss, long jump, relay, obstacle course and much more. The Hopi Fit Club said the hard work and extra hours planning the event was worth it. “It takes an army just to fi ll the shoes of a PE teacher,” Pearson said. “We are so excited that we can provide the Field Day for the students.” Maddie Rice, Sinclaire Titzck, Lucas Rice, and Kemp VanEs practice their starting positions for the relay races. Dutch VanEs practices the long jump for fi eld day.
